Moving to Vienna

It was a year ago when I found my apartment for weekend in Vienna, I finally decided to move to Vienna despite long commuting time. The apartment room is not big, or rather small, I cannot buy things easily and I think it very nice for me. I do not want to own things any more. Fruitful time and with those who to share. The Father of my friend kindly helped me to transport my things from Steyr, I cannot thank him too much for his proposal. Most of my laggage was book, although I abandoned many in advance.

The driver came all the way from Rumania this day, more than 1000km away. He understands German and the other only little because he just started to live in Austria since January and we spoke in English. They are Rumanien and speak Rumanien in general, but I understood them relatively much because the language is quite similar to Italian. First I talked in English with the one and he translated into Rumanien, but from the middle I spoke Italian and they had understood me fairly well.

To commute to my office, I will buy a year pass of Austrian Railway (ÖBB) for 1790 Euro, which allows me to take any second class train in Austria including some bus lines and local trains, or it costs too much. A round ticket from Vienna to my office costs 30 Euro in 50% price with railway card (100 Euro a year). 4 days a week would be summed up to 500 Euro a month. It is definately not a small amount of money but the year pass will allow me to use it for my private time and to anywhere. It is much more reasonable any way. I can never lose it!

I started to live in Vienna as a test, I wanted to try to spend my private time here after living in a small city for seven years. Once a stone starts to roll, it goes down and down. At least I am sure that I had a right decision for me and I am looking foward to my new environment.

Kurzarbeit

Since March I am working shorter than usual. My department applied the "Kurzarbeit" (short work) at local job office for six months, I work 15% less but salary cut within 10%. The difference would come from the job office, so-to-say from our tax payment accumulation. It is of course much better for the gevornment that working hours shorten than that jobless rate would raise instead. For the company, they do not have to pay for employees without work but lose people with experience so easily. Actually I myself and my team members have lots to do, but as a while in our department many are working in engineering projects and we have less projects compared to last year. This system is quite flexible. We have to register the number of people who would work shorter in advance for the next month, but it is also possible that some of us would work normally from the next month because of a sudden overload of the work from new projects.

部署が地方の労働局に6ヶ月間のKurzarbeit(短縮就労)を申請したためだ。

In Austria usual working hours a week is 38.5. During this period we are allowed to work 25 hours less a month, we would take three days off and one hour compensation somewhere in the month. At first I expected to work an hour shorter each day to have more time in Vienna every day, but it was no allowed and I have to follow how others would do. I would take these three days off at once, and other weeks I would work one day from home and other weekdays I have to commute to office in two hours. If I add two days from my vacation to the week I would take three days off due to the rule, I will have a whole week free. If I could have lots of money to spend, it might have been an ideal situation maybe..

Goran Gregovic concert

One of my friends asked me the other day if I would like to join the concert of Goran Gregovic, for his 60th birthday. I once heard of him before and maybe saw his clip, but I did not have any chance to see him until now. She was at the festival in Szeged, Hungary last summer and saw his concert there.

http://www.theater-wien.at/index.php/de/spielplan/production/2391

The concert hall was Theater an der Wien, it is actually an opera house. The hall was fully packed, our sheets were on the second floor. He appeared in full white and his blue guitar seemed very cool. They sang songs too but in Slavic language which I have never learned, but from time to time I caught some familiar words similar to Russian. There might have been many audiences from Yugoslavia.

It was a great concert, he is a real entertainer. He seemed to enjoy himself with audiences. Vocals were wonderful, from silent music to groovy one, we enjoyed everything at once. One song still refrains in my head, na-na nanananana-......

Natto heater

Since my last post to make natto by myself I had some problems, I ordered a small heater from Japan to keep the temperature stable. The natto making kit I ordered used disposable heater out of activated carbon which uses reaction heat by oxygen and it was rather hard to estimate the ideal time for fermentation. I first thought of going to fish shop where they sell water heater for the fish and modify it for my usage, but here is Vienna. All shops will be closed on Sundays and it would take me quite long time to look for shops. I did not want to take my private time for that.

The heater, as I was able to imagine quite easily, is very simple and I could have made it by myself, but it should take me time to gather all electric devices such as thermostat or variable condenser which can be procured quite quite easily when I would go to Akihabara. This device just combines a bulb and variable condenser but is fixated already to keep the temperature at 40 degrees, which is connected to bimetall, so-to-say thermostat.

Since I got this device, my natto life became quite comfortable. I do not have to check the temperature during fermentation, I just set up everything and just unplug after a certain hours, usually 22 hours. And the quality of my natto became very stable and very good! I would wash soybeans on Thursday and I start to steam them in pressure pan on Friday but just for 30 minutes, then I send them to fermentation for about a day. It is hardly difficult but quite easy when it once gets into routine work.

I even ordered this device for my Iranian book-writer friend, he is a natto aficianado and used to buy natto in Japanese shop in Vienna for every day's meal. He was at first skeptical that it tastes much better than deep cooled natto sold at the shop and I once gave him the one I did. He was so impressed by that and told me that it tastes completely different, even mentioned fantastic! Now he should also enjoy his natto life, but I did not hear from him that he already procured a pressure pan, or it takes more than 10 hours to steam soy beans to be ready for fermentation.

My friend who loves natto and whom I deliver my natto every week also seems to be very happy with it.

Spring has finally come 春到来

It finally became spring, temperature raised up to 16 or 17 degrees, it is sunny and I saw the streets without pebbles. At flower shops they sell colorful tulips or roses in addition to salix gracilistyla. Now the Easter is coming, I see colorful eggs, bunny-shaped chocolates or bread everywhere at show windows. The weather forcast says that it will be warmer and may reach 20 degrees, finally we can go out without coats. I also saw some people drving their open car with their roof opened.

It is recognisable that the day is getting longer and longer day by day. Next weekend is the end of winter time, clock will proceed by an hour. I do not especially miss sunshine during winter as many European would do, but now I can understand their feeling; there is a huge contrast between winter and spring in color and brightness.

Invasion to salsa dance floor

X day for me on Saturday night. Actually I took an-hour lesson three times with my friend, then we practiced sometimes at home checking how we should move our feet. There are many dance schools in Vienna; the city is quite famous for its Wiener Ball, new year dance party at the State Opera and there are also many balls, dance party locally. When they once finish their course, they would have some possibilities to enjoy dancing, to go to some clubs or the school organize such the event and also open it to the public. The event held on Saturday was also organized by one of dance schools in Vienna, occupying the big hall at Hilton hotel in the center of Vienna. It started to snow that day, the temperature dropped down to minus and the streets were white and slippery then. I thought that winter has already gone but it seemed to have come back again, not willing to say goodbye.

My friends dressed up fabulously and I did somehow like a bartender, got a taxi to get to the hotel. Actually the number of girls are much more than men, I was supposed to work very hard. The hall was possibly actually reserved for students at dance school and with live music, not only Salsa. Outside of the hall, there was a Salsa corner. I repeated what I have learnt from my teacher until the week before, and practiced with my friend again and again. Others are much more experienced and can dance well. In the corner, I saw some very good dancers and I wished that I could dance in that way. Maybe in some time if I would practice hard on that. Not only salsa, as I live in Vienna, I want to be able to dance others too.

Spring bringer

I feel that spring is going to come when I see asparagus at supermarkets and this salix gracilistyla. In German it is called Palmkätzchen, cat palm. It is interesting that both of German and Japanese people have imagined cat from this texture. Unfortunately there is no fish which represents spring in Austria such as scomberomorus niphonius, which is written in the combination of two single letter "fish" and "spring".

Chocolate fondue

On last Friday, I was invited to the birthday party of one of my friends, she wanted to make chocolate fondue for her birthday party. When it comes to fondue, actually I have never tried when I was in Japan. My first experience was in the Switzerland and was cheese fondue. Or I am not quite sure if I once put marshmaro on fire and dipped in melted chocolate. It I did, it should be thousand miles away from me in my memory anyway.

Many of guests were French including the host, the first dish was quiche.  Now I sometimes cook some international dishes, but when I was in Japan I seldom went out to try out foods I have never had. I have to confess that I did not know the difference between pizza and quiche at all until now. The simple quish out of bacon was really good. When I was learning French in Paris some years ago, I had to look for a proper restaurant course menu of regional dishs from Aquitaine, France and present others how they would be cooked. I usually cook some mixture of Japanese and Italian, I also want to know some of French cuisine. I once cooked "coque au vine" chicken in red wine by reading recept for others, maybe I will try and learn more other recipes.

The main event of the day: chocolate fondue. She prepared some fruit like strawberry, pineapple, grapes and bananas, it is really fun to take chocolate as if I were playing. I usually do not eat chocolate very much but I like fruits. I like the one with strawberry or pineapple with chocolate, the combination of sourness of fruit and sweetness of chocolate.

Housing affairs

The biggest difference about housing between in Austria and in Japan is how they offer accomodation. There are apartments that everything is already furnished and ready to live which is quite usual in Japan though, but many are not. People can do almost anything to change the apartment, paint the walls, put wooden board, drill holes and etc, and of course buy and build up kitchen. In Japan contrarily, it is usually not allowed to change anything; paint, nor even nails on the wall! And they have to restore everything as it used to be when they move to another. There is a contract period, when people want to stop the contract and officially singed up, they have to pay for the apartment for more three months. It is as same as cable TV or cellular phone contract which I first found quite strange. So when people decided to move, first thing to do is to find somebody wants to move to the apartment, so to say successor who would take over kitchen and would share the expense of kitchen or everything, and this has nothing to do with the company which maintains the apartment.

My case, the apartment I found two years ago, there was nothing inside except bath tub, toilet, heat body of central heating in each room. There was no furniture, no kitchen and it is quite usual here which is almost impossible to imagine in Japan. The previous people just has lived for more than 20 years and the company cleaned up everything; walls, floors, new heating, bathroom and so on. So there was really nothing inside but just white walls.

When I decided to quit my contract with my apartment, I put ads with a picture on the Steyr city internet site, I got contacted by some people within a week. I showed my apartment after work, and finally a young couple that just got their second bady decided to take over my apartment. I have to negotiate the price for kitchen, beds and drawer, design board and so on.

They have just bought a new wash machine and a sofa, I still have to find somebody to sell, but to find a successor is always the annoying issue; due to the color or design some people would not like to take over the kitchen or the furniture. I feel very relieved to find my successor quite quickly.
