Japan, the Country of 3 Hs 1 ３Ｈの国日本１

I have a feeling that my eyes often catch articles about Japan in recent newspapers or magazines. Japan might have not been a country for European to travel to. They are desperate for sun lights and they head south in summer. But it seems that it changes gradually. Of course, it might be reasonable to think that most of them have visited every European country and want new stimulation. Addition to Japanese cars, Koreans with low price and high quality sell well these days and existence of China as a cheap products and work force provider cannot be neglected within the EU and starts to influence European industry negatively. Then general people would be interested in and curious for Asian countries. "Sushi" would stride as a representative of Japan and number of sushi bars increases greatly, it gets quite common to eat in Chinese restaurant with chopsticks, and for businessmen, they have more opportunities to travel to on business until their companies would build their own factories or developing block. It is often seen a plan of package tour in newspaper to travel through big cities especially in China or in Japan, still not so much in Korean. Moreover they also introduce custom and cultural difference in the weekend special edition for traveling. Especially since last year it gets more common. I have also found an article about "Japanese sleeping culture" more than once, that every Japanese can drop asleep everywhere.

最近新聞や雑誌で、日本に関する記事を目にする機会が増えてきたような気がしている。欧州人にとって日本というのはコレまで旅行に行く対象ではなかったと思う。彼らはこよなく陽の光を愛し、シーズンになるとこぞって海を目指して南下する。これも次第に変わりつつあるようだ。もちろん彼らが欧州の国をほぼ行き尽くして、新しい刺激を求めているということも考えられるだろうが、なによりもここ最近、日本車に加えて安くて品質のいい韓国車がずいぶん売れるようになってきたこと、安い製品や人材を輸出する国としての中国の存在がもはやＥＵ加盟国内の産業に大きく打撃を与えるようになってきたことなどがきっかけになり、一般の人までも含めた多くの人がアジアというものの存在に興味を持つようになってきた。寿司が日本の代名詞として寿司屋が増え、何かの折には中華レストランで箸を使って食事をする機会が増え、またビジネスマンにとっては出張の回数が増えたり、製造業の会社が独自の生産、開発拠点を彼の地に持つに至るまでになってきた。パック旅行の企画として特に中国の大都市、韓国はまだそれほどではないにせよ、日本の主要都市を周遊するものなど、新聞でも度々見られるようになってきた。さらには、彼の地での習慣や文化の違いを週末の旅行特集で紹介するようなこともある。この１年ほどで特に目立つようになってきた。日本人の”眠ることに関しての文化”の記事も何度か目にしたことがある。いつでもどこでも寝られるというもの。

The usual explanation about Japan in such articles are "a country of wonder". I myself use the word often to ask people around me for the project with Japanese customers that Japanese are aliens. This time I found the article in a newspaper very similar but in opposite way. The title of the article is "A country of 3 Hs, bowing is citizen's sport". These 3 Hs do not mean Japanese "H", but High-Tech, Höflichkeit(politeness) and Hygiene. Japanese people tend to take first letters of each of three words such as 3 Hs, tall, highly educated and high income for ideal man for women. These 3 Hs in the newspaper get the point straight and can be clearly distinguished from China or Korea. Needless to say about high-tech, Toyota is now about to be the world biggest automobile company in the world. Top ranks of the automotive producers whose cars have statistically less problems are occupied by Japanese companies. In the field of digital camera, fame of Japanese producers is apparently stable, for house appliances, it is so usual that many people do not even know that it is by Japanese companies. Politeness of Japanese are refereed to the business-card-exchanging tradition. This ceremony became a standard in industrialized countries. They do not just mimic Japanese style, but they think it also very efficient to exchange their cards before starting meeting and make the communication smooth. The last one, hygiene. I read many articles that treat "washlet". Naturally it also contains the context of high-tech. Approaching the toilet, its lid would be opened automatically, put out BGM for the people that mind to be heard from outside, and additionally, the toilet seat is warm! There are many buttons in the line and one can adjust the position of the water head and water pressure, then dries. For women there attached a button for bidet. W O N D E R. That taxi doors will be opened by driver automatically, because Japanese would regard it dirty. In the article I found also lines saying that Japanese would be surprised to be asked for hand shaking because of their idea that it is not very clean. I can agree that many Japanese people are addicted to antibacterial goods and thought that some people would hate to open taxi door by themselves. However, I was not able to agree to the speculation about hand shaking, I sent an e-mail to the newspaper.

そういう記事で、日本に与えられる説明として多いのが、”不思議な国”というものだ。自身が仕事上、時折日本人を異星人として周囲の理解を求めることがあるのだが、今回たまたまそれとは逆の立場のものを新聞に見つけた。そのタイトルが”３Ｈの国。お辞儀は国家のスポーツ”というようなものである。この３Ｈ，もちろん日本語のＨを意味するものではなく、High-Tech、Höflichkeit(礼儀正しさ)と、Hygiene(清潔)の３つである。日本人には頭文字をとって何でもまとめようとする癖があるが、この３Ｈはなかなか的を得ていて、しかも中国や韓国と明らかに区別がなされている。ハイテクに関しては言うまでもなく、今やトヨタが世界一の自動車メーカーになりつつあり、ADACの統計になれば故障率の少ない自動車メーカーというのは上位をほとんど日本メーカーが占めている。デジタルカメラの世界でもブランドイメージは圧倒的に強く、家電に至ってはそれが日本のメーカーであることを知らない人も多いくらいに浸透している。日本人の礼儀正しさも名刺交換の作法を挙げて説明が加えられている。今やこの名刺交換は先進諸国でもスタンダードになりつつある。日本を真似しているというよりも、会議を進める前にお互いの名前を確認して、コミュニケーションをよりスムーズに進めようという意義が世界的に理解されたということである。そして最後の清潔。多くの記事でお目にするのがウォシュレット。もちろんここは最初のハイテクとも兼ね合いのある部分。トイレに入ると便器のふたが自動で開き、音を気にする人のためにBGMが流れ、便座が温かい！そしてずらーっと並ぶボタンで自分の体に合った位置や水流の強弱、そして乾燥まで。女性用にはビデスイッチまである。お・ど・ろ・き。というわけだ。手を触れなくともタクシーのドアが開くのも日本人が清潔を重んじていると結んでいる。そんな記事の中、挨拶の際に日本人に握手を求めるときょとんとするのも、日本人がそれを衛生上好ましくないと思っているからだという一行があった。むろん日本の抗菌中毒は頷けるため、タクシーのドアの場合も今はそのように感じる人も結構いるのかもしれないと思ったが、こと握手に関してはあまりにもこじつけだろうと感じ、新聞社に投書してみる。

I wonder that I first read the book about five years ago, when I felt something very disgusting. I thought as if the author just laughs at whoever works earnestly. Of course just to work earnestly does not always make sense, nobody can find hot spring without researching where to dig. However, his book advises how to get much unearned income and it is important to get out of "rat race" to spend a rich life. I just felt it a typical American idea and they love money games. Maybe such idea may not be very special nor odd in America.

この本を初めて読んだのはもう５年ほど前になろうか。その時はなんだかとてもいやーな気分になった。真面目に働くということを笑っているかのような気がした。もちろん真面目に働くだけではしょうがない。いくら真面目に土を掘ったって、事前に調査をしなければ温泉も湧いてくるはずがない。しかし彼の本は、いかにして不労所得を増やし、いわゆる｢ラットレース｣から抜け出すかが裕福な生活を送るために必要であるかと説いていた。いかにもマネーゲームの好きなアメリカ人の考え方だと思った。でもアメリカではこれがさほど飛び抜けた考えでもないのだろう。

When compared among European, American and Japanese if they want to keep working after pension, very many Japanese would prefer to continue to work after retirement. In Europe the word "pensioner" sounds very cozy, but in Japan nobody would introduce themselves as a pensioner. It comes just from an idea how to find own value in the society and it differs very much from Euro-American one.

日本人と欧州人、アメリカ人を比べてみればすぐにわかることだが、日本人には定年後でも働けるのであれば働きたいと答える人が圧倒的に多い。だから｢年金生活者｣という言葉がヨーロッパではとてもいい響きを持っているのに対し、日本人で｢わたしは年金生活者です｣と答えるだろう人が居ないことでも分かる。自分というものの存在価値を何によって見つけることができるかという考え方の違いである。

Recent Japanese news is full of the issue of Livedoor. The media criticizes politicians, political parties or even other media that cheered the former president of Livedoor. But how can a man just criticize those who cheers him after knowing that Japanese pension system is almost broken up. There should have been many people that started buy stocks to multiply their pocket money. If a politician says loud, "any person should work earnestly", then she should be just a liar. It is the politician that have been making fool on citizens to plug for daily life.

ここ最近は日本のニュースはライブドア事件で持ちきり。彼の人を持ち上げた政治家や政党を非難したり、ヒーロー扱いしてきたマスコミを非難したり。でも、日本の年金制度がここまで破綻しているのが分かっていて、どうして彼を持ち上げる人だけを非難できようか。多くはない小遣いを殖やすために株を始めた人だって少なくはなかったはずである。今｢真面目に働くのが一番｣などと口にする政治家がいたら、ただの嘘つきだ。一般人が｢真面目に働くこと｣をばからしいと感じるようになってきたのは、そういう政治家たちのせいである。

Pension problem is a common issue in Austria, too. However, the system is completely different from Japanese one. Austrian people must not pay from twenty years old, they can start to pay after starting work. They can receive full payment if they have paid for forty years, then may highly educated people that study in universities do not have the right from the beginning. Engineers especially, there is just degree from master and doctor, when they got a academic title they should already be at youngest 25 years old. Therefore they have to compensate the loss with personal pension. This is the current situation in Austria. It is much healthier than Japanese one. Of course the people should contribute to pension system and if they would refuse to pay, they can also be fined. But still mass media is just trying to find fault with others. I think they do not know what is more important. To work earnestly is important, and to think it very precious is something and admirable, only if everybody does not especially have to work for living after pension time.

オーストリアでも年金の問題はしばしば取り上げられるが、そもそも仕組みが違う。日本のように２０歳から支払いを義務付けられているわけではなく、支払いは働き始めてからでいい。４０年間の支払いで満額の支給を受けることができるが、大学に進学するような人はすでにその資格がない。特に工学系には修士以上しかないから、学卒は必然的に２５歳以上になる。それで満額貰えない分を個人年金で補おうとしているのが現在の状況。日本の状況よりも明らかに健全である。大衆道徳の乱れはもちろん正すべきなのだろうが、マスコミは揚げ足取りをするばかり。どうも事の順番を間違えているのではないかという気がしてならない。勤労を尊いことだと感じることは貴重なことだが、誰もが定年後も働かないと生きていけないというのでは他の国から賞賛の対象になるわけがない。
