On Dec 24. shops will be closed around 15:00, Christmas market will be also closed. Christmas trees for sale on the streets will finish their role, people are busy going out to buy food for Chritmas vacation. On Dec. 25, vacant streets, no cars, silence dominates.

クリスマスイブにはお店が15時あたりで閉まってしまう。クリスマスマーケットも後片付けを始め、通りで売られている、モミの木のクリスマスツリー、これもご用済み。スーパーが閉まってしまうので、クリスマスのお祝いの期間分の食料を買出しに出る人がたくさんいる。そして25日には、通りに人がいない、車もない、静かな街になる。

Only the Christmas markets at St.Stephen's Cathedral are open for tourists. But they do not have Glühmost at all. Lots of tourists are around the square.

シュテファン寺院のクリスマスマーケットだけは観光客用に開いている。でもグリューモストは売っていない。広場のまわりは観光客で賑わっている。

Later, around 20 o'clock, streets became almost empty except around Kärntner street.

20時を迎えるころには、通りも人がすっかり少なくなる。ケルントナー通りには観光客がまだちらほら。

Christmas Hiking クリスマスハイク

A friend of mine asked me if I would like to go hiking on the Christmas day. Usual people would stay at home with their family, it was actually very cold outside.

友人の一人がクリスマスにハイキングに行かないかと誘ってきた。普通の人は家族と一緒に家で過ごす。実際外はとても寒かった。

We met at Charles Church and then took metro and street car to Wienerwald. There are lots of hiking courses there which would take from 2 to 4 or 5 hours. I went for hiking for sometimes in fall. Mountain treck was coverted with snow or partly icy. We took care not to slip on the ice and went up the mountain path.

カールス教会で待ち合わせをし、地下鉄と路面電車を乗り継いでウィーンの森へ。そこには2時間から4、5時間かかるハイキングコースがいくつもある。秋に何度か来た。山道は雪で覆われていて、ところどころ凍結していた。気をつけながら山道を登っていく。

We had a lunch break at the mountain lodge including sweets. There are several families there, maybe they drove up here by car. We had a view over Vienna and then came back to city again.

ロッジでスイーツも含めてお昼にする。何組か家族連れがいたが、みんな車でここまで来たに違いない。ウィーンの上からの景色を拝んでまた町に戻る。

Christmas / birthday celebration

This year I stayed in Vienna during Christmas period. My friends also stayed in Vienna during the time and we decided to get together to celebrate Xmas and a birthday of one of us.

今年はクリスマスをウィーンで過ごす。友人たちもウィーンに居るようで、みんなで一緒にクリスマスと一人の誕生日をお祝いすることにする。

On 24th we went to Baden, parent's house of my friend and I was very busy cutting ingredients into pieces. Sometimes I have to cook which I have never done before. This time I tried two different kinds of lasagne, chocolate mousse and salad. Thank to a guest from the USA, actually she assembled what I cooked with pasta sheet and cheese into common lasagna form. It tasted much better than I expected! Maybe I have to take it seriously to my recipe. Another friend of mine finished his family celebration and came all the way to Baden very late. We received (not "exchanged") presents from the host, I got a ticket for a concert, which I like very much. It was a surprise.

２４日にはみんなでバーデンにある友達の両親の家に行き、そこで食材を刻むのに忙しくしていた。時々これまで作ったことのないようなものを料理することがある。今回は２種類のラザニアにチョコレートムースとサラダ。今回はアメリカからのゲストのおかげで、肉や野菜を調理したものを、彼女がパスタをゆでてラザニアの形にしてくれた。思っていたよりもはるかにおいしかった！まじめにレシピに加えなくては。別の友人は家族でのお祝いが終わった後に遅くなったにもかかわらず駆けつけてくれた。そこでプレゼントをもらった。好きなアーティストのコンサートのチケットだった。正直驚いた。

On the next day, as my friend told us since long time that we would cook us indian curry, he kept his promise and finally he realised it on the birthday party of one of our member. He was modest with it but it was very good. Unfortunately I was not able to prepare the birthday present for her, it was so clumsy of me.

次の日はこれまでインドカレーを作るといい続けてきた友人が共通の友人の誕生日にその公約を果たした。控えめな物言いだったがとてもおいしかった。残念ながら彼女の誕生日プレゼントを用意できなかった。まったく恥ずかしい限り。

I had never had so a heart-warming celebration, I used to work all the time during Christmas time: every new year holiday we planned modification or new-fit of facility and was one of the busiest time for me in Japan. My ex-colleages are still working in that way. I do not say which one is better or not, but to have such nice friends around me and meet up for such a special event is very valuable and precious, which is hardly expected. I am so happy with my situation and thank my friends from the bottom of my heart.

これまでこんなに心のこもったクリスマスを迎えたことがない。日本に居たころはクリスマスといえばいつも働いていた。正月のお休みには工場設備の改造や補修の計画を立て、一年でも一番忙しい時期だった。元職場の同僚はいまでもそうやって働いている。どちらがいいとか悪いとか言うつもりはないが、自分の周りのこんなにも素敵な友人が居て一緒にお祝いができることはととても貴重で、望んでも簡単にできることではない。今の状況にはとても満足しているし、友人たちには心から感謝している。

Christmas market クリスマスマーケット

It is already in the middle of advent, I saw Christmas market with customers, friends for several times. Very close from my apartment there is also a Christmas market at Charles Church and I went out to warm myself from inside... it was a cold Sunday night the day of St.Nicolaus and children would receive sweets. I personally call it Chocolaus day.　Here is the post from last year about Christmas market in Steyr and you can see Nicolaus there.

もうアドベントも半ば。お客さんや友達と何度かクリスマス市に出かけた。家の近くのカールス教会でもクリスマスマーケットがあり、日曜の夜は体を温めにそこへ出かけた。聖ニコラウスの日。子供が甘いものをもらえる日だ。個人的にチョコラウスと呼んでいる。昨年のシュタイヤーでのクリスマスマーケットに関するエントリーはこちら。ニコラウスの写真あり。



Actually this Nicolaus and Krampus which is so-to-say a devil come together. First Krampus and then Nicolaus on Dec.5 and 6. Krampus cannot be seen in bigger cities but in a small city like Steyr, there will be held a parade of Krampus and they frighten children such as Japanese "Namahage". Correctly this parade in the picture is called "Perchten" and it is slightly different from Krampus, but almost nobody can exactly tell the difference between these two.

実際にはニコラウスとクランプス（邪悪を象徴するもの）は一緒にやってくる。最初にクランプスが１２月５日、そしてその次の日にニコラウス。クランプスの習慣は大きな街では見られないが、シュタイヤーのような地方の町ではクランプスのパレードが開かれ、日本のなまはげのように子供を怖がらせる。実際には写真のパレードはペアヒテンと呼ばれていて、クランプスとは別物だが、ほとんどの人はその２つがどう違うのかはっきりとは知らないようだ。

Christkindlpost クリストキンデルポスト

I have been to the Christkindlpost (Christmas post office) in Steyr to send some cards to my friends. The post office is usually closed and only the guest house aside is opened in summer. I heard that the city invested some amount of money to change something, when I saw that today I was fully shocked. It became a hotel/restaurant + seminar house!

シュタイヤーのクリストキンデルポストに友達に書いたクリスマスカードを出しに行って来た。この郵便局は普段は閉まっていて、隣のゲストハウスだけが夏でも開いている。市がいくらかお金を出してここを工事すると聞いていたが、今日見てびっくりした。ホテル兼レストラン＋セミナーハウスになっていた！

Of course there is the post office part as usual, but it looks too modern now. Well to secure number of beds for high season (now is the highest season in Steyr because of the Christmas Post)
Anyway, there is no difference to send cards via this post office. The post office started to send cards with Christkindl stamp since 1950. Every year they have a new design and there are lots of collectors. I come to the post office every year to send post cards from here.

もちろん郵便局の部分はこれまで通りだが、あまりにもモダンで雰囲気に合わない。もちろんこのハイシーズンのベッド数を確保するにはこうするのも手だったのかもしれないが。（この郵便局がオープンしている時期が一番のハイシーズン）
どちらにしてもカードを出す上では何も変わったことはない。毎年新しいデザインの切手と消印が出て、コレクターも沢山いる。毎年ここへ来てカードを出している。

In front of this post office, there is a church where Christkindl is symbolized. This Barock style church, "Wallfahrts Church" was started to built from 1703 and finished in 1708.

郵便局の手前にはクリストキンデイルがシンボルの教会がある。このバロックスタイルのウォールファーツ教会は１７０３年に工事が始まり１７０８年に完成した。


It is almost unrecognizable to find the figure of Christkindl inside, he is in the very center of radiation below on the sphere where angels are flying nearby.

クリストキンデルの像を見つけるのはとても難しいが、下の球の上、宙を舞う天使の横にある、光が放射状に発している部分の中心にいる。

There is another one to be seen in Christmas time, (but not for me:) A real size Krippe (model of the scene for Birth of Jesus).

そのほかにもクリスマスの時期には、実寸大のクリッペもお目見えする。（キリスト生誕のシーンのモデル）


"Is there Christmas in Japan?" lots of foreigners would ask you so. My usual answer is "yain"(yes/no) to them, for there is only an event called "Christmas" in Japan in the same period. But there is no national holiday there. Who actually knows Advent in Japan? Christmas celebration starts 4 weeks before Christmas. Since long time Japanese are very good at modifying and adjust anything for themselves, but it is far from "usual" Christmas.

”日本にもクリスマスはあるの？”と沢山の外国人が聞くことでしょう。わたしの普段の答えは”どちらでもない”。それというのも、日本には同じ時期に”クリスマス”と呼ばれているイベントがあるだけだから。祝日でもなく、日本で誰がアドベントと言われて反応するだろう。クリスマスのお祝いはクリスマスの4週間前から始まることも。長い間日本人はどんなものでも取り入れそれを自分たちに合うように消化することに長けてきたが、もうそれは”普通”のクリスマスからは程遠いものだ。

From the personal feeling, Japanese New Year celebration is much closer to the Christmas here, and New Year celebration here is similar to the Christmas in Japan from the view if most of people would stay at home. As is still common for many Japanese to be at home in Obon and Shogatsu period, (middle August and New Year) most of European would return to their parents for Christmas.

個人的な感覚からすれば、人が家に留まっているかどうかという視点から見れば、日本の新年のお祝いがこちらのクリスマスには近く、こちらの新年のお祝いが日本のクリスマスに近い。まだ沢山の日本人がお盆と正月には家に帰るように、（そう望まれているように）ヨーロッパ人のほとんどはクリスマスには家に帰って両親と過ごす。

Christkindlmarkt in Steyr クリストキンデルマルクト （シュタイヤ編）

On December 6th is St.Nicolas day, when a man with white beard with a tall red hat appears to deliver chocolates, candies and cookies represent Krampus, a figure of evil. It looks like St.Claus and surely these two are from the same root assumably.

１２月６日はニコラウスの日。白髭をはやして、高い赤帽をかぶったおじさんが子供にチョコレート、キャンディにクランプスという邪悪を象徴するものをかたどったクッキーを分け与える日。サンタクロースと似ていなくもないが、おそらく２つの”象徴”は同じところから来たものだろう。

Christmas market in Steyr started last week, is open from every Friday to Sunday. This one, compared to the one in Vienna, very local and is not filled with tourists, or even people sometimes. Small but as is usual, Gluehwein, Gluehmost or punch out of several kinds of berries are overall available, and bosna (sausage with fine cut onion), chocolate, soaps, Christmas decoration and for little children pony-ride and a kind of roller coaster which might be seen in amusement parks.

シュタイヤーのクリスマスマーケットは先週始まり、金曜日から日曜日までやっている。シュタイヤーのものはウィーンのものとは違って、地元の人が顔をあわせるようなアットホームなもので、観光客でごった返すこともなく、それどころか時間によっては人もまばら。
でも普通にグリューワイン、グリューモスト、いろんな種類のイチゴ類から作ったパンチはどこでも飲めて、それにボスナ（ソーセージに刻み玉ねぎ）、チョコレート、石鹸、クリスマスのデコレーション。子供用にはポニーや遊園地で見られるようなコースターもある。

As written in title, in Austria Christmas market is not called so but Christkindlmarkt. Christkindl means Christ child, a figure of child Christ. In Steyr there is also a church where this Christkindl plays a major role and beside there is a Christmas post. Further information may follow next week.

タイトルに書いたように、オーストリアのクリスマスマーケットは普通クリストキンデルマルクトと呼ばれている。クリストキンデルというのは子供のキリストを象徴するもので、シュタイヤーにはこのクリストキンデルが主役を務める教会に、その隣にはクリスマス専用の郵便局もある。この詳細は来週あたりに。

As an "iron" city, forging demonstration is common for Christkindlmarkt.

”鉄の町”として鍛治のデモンストレーションはもちろんのこと。

Here is the personified Christkindl since three years. She is now reading some lines from Bible? to children. Every year a new young girl will be chosen to play this important role for a year for tourism.

ここではこの３年来”人間化”されたクルストキンデルが子供たちの前で聖書の一節？を読み聞かせている。毎年新しい若い女性が選ばれ、一年間の任につく。観光にとってはとても大事な仕事だ。
As it got darker more and more people came to the market.
To watch forging show in the dark is something mysterious, maybe earlier times should have seemed like that.

暗くなるにつれて人がますます増えてきた。暗がりの鍛治のデモンストレーションを見るのはなかなか幻想的。昔はこんな感じだったんだろう。

Here I came across where St.Nicolas holded a lecture that children can watch St.Nicolas any time in the Internet... Oh god, what a dreamless world it is now! But children are much more realistic than I am, they are just glad that they received chocolates or Krampus cookies from him.

ここではニコラウスが子供相手に、インターネットでいつでもニコラウスに会えるなどと説教をたれている。なんて夢のない世界になったもんだ！でも子供の方がぼくより現実的。チョコレートやクランプスのクッキーをもらって大喜び。

Christmas market in Vienna クリスマスマーケット（ウィーン編）

I first have to mention that it is not the traditional style of Christmas market in Austria, Vienna is not Austria as Tokyo is not Japan ;) I sometimes go to Vienna, it is much more comfortable to be than in Steyr in many reasons. There are many Christmas market places in Vienna, but one of the major places is surely the one at city hall.

最初に断っておかなければならないが、これはオーストリアの伝統的なクリスマスマーケットではない。東京が日本でないのと同様、ウィーンはオーストリアではない。たまにウィーンに行くが、シュタイヤーにいるよりもいろんな理由で居心地がいい。ウィーン市内では沢山のクリスマスマーケットがあるが、一番有名なのは文句なく市庁舎前のものだろう。

If you look closely, you can recognize that each windows has unique number.

よく見ていただければ、それぞれの窓が数字が書かれた布で覆われているのがわかる。

This is Advent calender. The Advent starts from 4 weeks before Christmas, each day they open the window of the matching number of the day. (or counting down)
As I mentioned above, this is the multi-national version of Christmas market and there are some huts where products from Hungary or Czech are sold, too. And German can seldom be heard, many people are speaking Hungarian, Czech or Russian and Englisch when they buy something.

これはアドベントカレンダーと呼ばれるもの。アドベントはクリスマスの４週間前から始まる節句のようなもので、毎日その日にあたる窓を開けていく。上でも触れたように、ウィーンのクリスマスマーケットはいろんな国のものが混ざっている。ハンガリーやチェコの物が売られていたりもする。ドイツ語がなかなか聞こえず、ハンガリー語、チェコ語とロシア語が飛び交い、モノを買う際には英語で対応している。

Krapfen, a kind of dounuts without center hole but often filled with orange or other jams.

クラップフェンと呼ばれる、中にオレンジやその他のジャムが入った穴のないドーナッツのようなもの。

The main aim to visit Christmas market is usually to have punsh (warm alcohol drink with fruit and herbs), or Gluehwein, warm read wine with some brandy (there is also a white wine version sometimes) with suger and etc. When it is cold outside, it is really nice!

クリスマスマーケットに行く大抵の目的は、プンシュと呼ばれる果物やハーブが入ったアルコール飲料や、グリューワインと呼ばれる赤ワインを暖めて砂糖やブランデーを混ぜたものを飲むこと。寒いときにはこれが一番。

Perchten ペァヒテン

The origine of St.Claus, the holiday of St.Nikolaus on 6th December. This day we are supposed to eat cholocate. A several days before the Nikolaus day, a parade by Perchten, it is similar to Japanese Namahage, was carried out in Steyr. Recently Coca-Cola truck would appear in the city square and I felt it mismatch to this old historical city. Two years ago, they started Perchtenlauf (parade of Perchten) and is very loved by citizens and seems to be accepted as annual event. In other Austrian cities, Krampus is more popular. Precisely they say that within Krampus there is good and evil, while Perchten is only evil.

いわゆるサンタクロースの元になっている、１２月６日のニコラウスの祝日。この日にはチョコを食べることになっています。そのニコラウスの日を前にペァヒテンという、日本で言うところの”ナマハゲ”の行進がシュタイヤーで開催されました。近年コカコーラ＝トラックなるものがこの時期になると広場に出没し、こんな古い歴史のある街にはどうかなぁと思っていましたが、Perchtenlauf (ペァヒテンラウフ＝ペァヒテンの行進) が２年ほど前から始まり、市民にも大変評判になってすでに定着した感があります。オーストリアのほかの町ではクランプスの方が知名度があるようです。厳密に言えばクランプスが善悪の両役者が居るのに対して、ペァヒテンは悪のみらしいのですが。。。

St.Claus サンタクロース

Santa Claus should play the main role for the Christmas, but here a small angel called Christkindle would take the role. In Germany it is called "Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market)" where people can buy candles or decorations and people can also drink warm wine. In Austria it is called "Christkindel market". It is quite interesting to know that in Russia or in Ukraine they have another heroin besides Santa Claus, "Snow girl", a grand daughter of Santa Claus, wearing blue costume in contrast with Santa Clauses' read. I wonder if the angel (Christkindel) and the snow girl have connection to each other. Well, Santa Claus does not just bring presents but has lots to do.

クリスマスといえばサンタクロースが主役になるはずなのだが、ここではクリストキンデルと言う小さな天使が主役になる。クリスマス前にろうそくや飾り、それに暖かいワインを売る出店などのことをドイツではクリスマスマーケットと言うが、ここではクリストキンデルマーケットと呼ばれる。面白いことにロシアやウクライナではサンタクロースの孫娘の雪娘というのがサンタクロースとは対照的な青い衣装を着て登場する。この天使と雪娘、もしかしてどこかで繋がっているのではと思わせる。しかしプレゼントを運ぶ以外にもサンタクロースにはいろんな仕事があるらしい。

Santa Claus would bring presents to children all over the world and make them happy. He is loved by the children. However, he cannot get any present. He is even made fun of by the angel. Really hard work for him. (It is written, there is nothing for you.) Maybe, in order to comfort such the pity Santa Claus, many children in the world would send him Christmas card to the Christmas Post in Steyr.

サンタクロースは世界中の子供たちにプレゼントをあげて喜ばれ、愛されているのに自分はひとつももらえない、天使にもアッカンベーをされるようなとてもつらい仕事である。（あんたの分はなーんもないよと書いてある）きっとそんな気の毒なサンタクロースを励ますために、世界中の子供たちがこのシュターヤーにあるクリスマスポストに手紙を書いてくれているに違いない。

Good old times 古き良き時代

When Christmas season comes, many tourists rush to Steyr. There is a Christmas post and they can have different postage stamp and postmark each year. For transportation to the post office from center square in Steyr, post bus will take the role. The three ton bus with 24 passenger sheets produced by Steyr in 1950. Its engine displacement is 5320cc and also made by Steyr. The company Steyr does not have automobile production line now, (there are production lines in Graz) more than 50 years ago it enjoyed its good times. It was founded in 1864 and now I am working in the company which used to be called Steyr Daimler Puch AG. Since the World War I, Austria had been occupied by Germany ruled by Nazi. The the company was the production base of tanks or military vehicles and also was bombed during the World War II.

クリスマスのシーズンがやってくると、たくさんの観光客がシュタイヤに押しかけます。ここにはクリスマス専用の郵便局があって、毎年異なる特別切手に特別スタンプがもらえるからです。そのクリスマスポストへの送迎用に、シュタイヤの中心から郵便局の送迎バスが登場します。1950年製の24人乗り、3トン弱のシュタイヤ製バス。エンジンは5320ccのシュタイヤ製ディーゼルエンジン。今は自動車の生産ラインを持ちませんが（もちろんグラーツには生産工場がありますけど）、この会社は当時こうして栄えていました。1864年に創業して以来の古い会社で、それが今日わたしが勤めている会社の前身のSteyr Daimler Puch AGです。第2次世界大戦では戦火にもまみれました。オーストリアがナチスドイツの占領下になって、戦車や軍用車を提供する基地になっていたからです。



Against my expectation, it was comfortable during the drive and engines worked as if it were just a little old. It was but still sensible with this suspension design that the chassis bumped slightly up when it was almost empty. From the interior we found it aged. However, almost every people on the street found the car and waved hands to it and it made passengers very pleased. The driver intentionally demonstrated diesel knock which we have to miss now and delighted passengers.

乗り心地は意外にもよく、エンジンの調子も年代を感じさせないものです。もちろんサスペンションの設計上、少ないお客さんが乗った状態では跳ねるような感じがあります。車内には時代を感じさせる趣があります。それよりも、道行く人たちがこのバスに手を振ってくれるのか何より楽しいです。運転手もわざわざ今ではあまり味わうことのできなくなったディーゼルエンジン特有のノッキングを披露して、乗客を喜ばせてくれます。
