Absorbed in music 音楽三昧

I happened to get to know an Austrian Jazz pianist at nearby restaurant to which I would bring my natto from time to time. I just asked who plays the CD, and they told me about his concert.

ひょんなことからオーストリア人のジャズピアニストについて知る。作った納豆をたびたび持っていく近所のレストランでのこと。誰のCDかと聞くと、彼のコンサートについて教えてくれた。

The cafe in 18th district is not open on weekends usually, but will be open when they have any concert.
Table and chairs, inside decoration look like unchanged since 50 years. The place was like a private space, non-smoking, I felt it very comfortable.

１８区にあるこのカフェはいつもは週末閉まっているが、コンサートのある日には開いている。机も椅子も内装も、５０年来変わっていないという感じ。タバコの煙もない、身近な人たちだけが集まった空間。とても落ち着く。

A female singer was there, too. She had a very clear voice which reminded me of Sheena Easton. All songs were arranged somehow jazzy, from German songs to Sting or Eurythmics. The man's voice was like Elton John, his piano was somewhat like the play of Bruce Hornsby.It was wonderful.

女性の歌手も出演。彼女の透き通った声はシーナ・イーストンを思わせた。楽曲全てジャズ風にアレンジされており、それがドイツの歌から、スティング、ユーリズミックスに至るまで。男性の声はエルトン・ジョンのようで、ピアノの演奏はどこかブルース・ホーンズビーのよう。素晴らしいステージだった。

After two stages, I put my donation for the stage, then I talked to him to say words of thank you and how I was there to listen to his concert. I left the café and then went to another live stage of a rock band in which one of my friends sings. Rock'n Roll until 24:00.

２ステージの後、有志の募金をし、彼のところに行ってお礼と、どうやってここに着たのか伝えて会場を去る。その後は友人がボーカルをやっているロックバンドのライブへ。真夜中までロック三昧。

It was Austrian holiday, the day of declaration of Neutrality in 1955, and there were lots of events held in Vienna. But for me it was a day of music this year.

On last Sunday I was in my apartment in Vienna as usual, and was to pick up my friend at Vienna airport who returned from the US after three weeks.
Her plane was planned to land at 8:35, I left my apartment around 7:15. Then I saw my very kind neighbor opened the door and looked for newspaper outside. He invited me for a cup of coffee and asked me, if I would like to come to a concert with him. I did not hear much about the detail, I was just about to leave to pick my friend up and I answered that I would ask my friend and tell him later.

先週の日曜日、いつものようにウィーンのアパートにいた。3週間ぶりにアメリカから帰ってくる友達を迎えにウィーン空港に行く予定でいた。彼女の飛行機は8時35分着の予定で、家を7時15分くらいに出た。ちょうどそのとき、とても親切な隣人が外の新聞を取るのにドアを開けた。彼はコーヒーでもどうかとこちらを誘い、そしてその日一緒にコンサートに行かないかと聞いた。詳しいことは聞かなかったが、友達を迎えに行くところだからあとで友達に聞いてから返事をすると答えた。

I picked her up and came back to my apartment, she looked so tired and still had jet-lag, and she told me that I should go alone. I rang my neibor's door and before I told him that she seemed to be too tired to go to the concert with me, he invited me another cup of coffee. Some of his friends were already there and I saw four people were sitting at the table then.

After some minute talk with them, my neighbor asked me if my friend maybe wanted to have some coffee or tea. I thought of saying good bye soon because I left my friend in my room. But the people there were a little mysterious, I thought it might be also interesting for her, I called her to join in the table even for a short time.

話をしながら数分して、隣人が彼女も何か飲まないかと聞く。彼女を部屋に残してきているからすぐにお暇するつもりだったが、そこにいた人たちはなにやら不思議な人たちで、きっと彼女にも面白いだろうと思って、少しでもいいから思って隣人宅に呼んだ。

The concert would be held at a cloister near the border between Czech Republic, and Roger Moore would be invited as a UNISEF ambassador. And the players are all the best of recent years, so-to-say young talents. After some talk with other guests, she seemed to get motivated to go to the concert even with her jet-lag. I borrowed a white shirt from my neighbor for the concert, she already had some dresses in her suitecase for a special event.

そのコンサートはチェコ国境付近の修道院でおこなわれ、ユニセフ大使としてロジャームーアも招待されているとのこと。それから演奏者はみないわゆる若手のホープと呼ばれている人たち。隣人の友人と話をしているうちに、彼女も時差ぼけもなんのその、どうやらコンサートに興味がわいてきたようだった。コンサート用に隣人から白いワイシャツを拝借した。彼女はスーツケースにそれようのものを何着か持っていた。

Black Mercedez Van was ready to drive us to the cloister in Pernegg, we left the center of Vienna around 13:00 and it took about two and a half hours from the center of Vienna. The area is called Waldviertel, forest-quarter, and I have just been to a city in this quarter for my colleagues funeral in chilly winter. We arrived at a hotel by the cloister, from the room I saw just forest, and very far away some roads where cars were seldom seen. The cloister was built in 1153 for female chorus, then after some hundred years it was converted to for male chorus.

黒のメルセデスVANが外で、我々をPerneggの修道院に連れて行くのに待ち構えていた。ウィーンを１３時ごろ出発して２時間半ほどで到着する。その地域はヴァルドフィアテル(forest quarter)と呼ばれているところで、一度別の町に同僚の葬儀のために来たことがある。とても寒い冬の日だった。修道院のすぐ脇にあるホテルについた。窓からは森しか見えない。かなり遠くのほうにたまに車が通るのが見えるだけ。修道院は１１５３年に女性コーラスのために建てられ、その後数百年して男性コーラス用になった。

From 19:00 concert started. Until then I was not informed any detail of the concert, when we received the program of the day, we were very surprised to know the players' background in detail.

In the very beautiful church, piano, violin and cello players played wonderful pieces from Johannes Brahms, Beethoven und one other. It was one of the most inspirational concerts I have ever listened, especially the last one. Roger Moore was sitting at the first row with his wife and daughter. He is the UNISEF Goodwill Ambassador and the event had something to do with the organisation.

とても綺麗な教会で、ピアノ、ヴァイオリンそれからチェロの演奏者が、ヨハネス・ブラームス、ベートーベンなどのすばらしい演奏を披露してくれた。これまで聞いた中で一番インスピレーションを感じさせてくれるコンサートのひとつだった。ロジャー・ムーアと奥さん、娘は最前列に座っていた。彼はユニセフの親善大使で、このイベントはユニセフとつながりがあるものだった。

After the concert we moved to the hotel for a dinner party, many TV cameras were ready for shooting. We took meals and enjoyed eating and talking with people with whom we drove together whom we just got to know 6 hours before.

コンサートの後、われわれはディナーパーティーの会場へ移動し、そこではたくさんのテレビカメラの準備がされていた。料理を取って、６時間前に知り合ったばかりの同乗者と食事と会話を楽しんだ。

This event continued until Tuesday, but we did not plan to take vacation for that, we returned to Vienna late night. What a surprising day was that! It became one of the most impressive days in my life.

このイベントは火曜日まで続くようだったが、残念ながら休暇の予定はしていなかったので深夜ウィーンに戻ってきた。なんて日だったろう。これまでの人生で一番印象深い日のひとつになった。

Volksmusikfest フォーク音楽祭

I sometimes go to an Italian restaurant in the district Steyrdorf. This time again, I happened to be there on the day of the local festival. This district used to be the center of Steyr more than 30 years ago, there were lots of shops along the narrow street. There were more shops built at the square, a shopping center was built six years ago. I personally like this district because of the street built of stone, and the view of slopes. Recently some shop keepers, bar keepers try to attract people, hold some small events and today's event is one of those. When I got there, there were already lots of people sitting at table outside, musicians were preparing for their play.

たまにシュタイヤードルフと呼ばれる地区にあるイタリアレストランに行く。今回もたまたま地域のイベントの日に出くわした。この地区は３０年以上前シュタイヤーの中心で、狭い通り沿いにたくさんの店が並んでいた。しかし、その後お店が中央広場に面したところにたくさん建てられ、６年前にはショッピングセンターも別の地区に建てられた。個人的には石畳の道と坂のある風景が気に入っている。最近はお店やバーの経営者がことあるたびにイベントを開いて人を呼ぶ努力をしているが、今日のイベントもどうもそのひとつらしい。レストランに着いたら既に沢山の人が外のテーブルについていて、演奏家たちは楽器の準備をしていた。



One of the most famous Austrians, Josef Werndl is from Steyrdorf. He founded a rifle company and when Edison invented light bulb, he also started to produce generators and bulbs. Houses in Steyrdorf was lighted with electric light bulbs for the first time in the world in 1884. And this company became Steyrwerk and then Steyr-Daimler-Puch, an Austria automotive company, where I am working for now. I like the whole history and I am sure that this makes the city Steyr something different, not just the city is the oldest in upper Austria.

Concert and public transportation コンサートと公共交通機関

What is usually written on a concert ticket? Of course concert date, name of artists and seat number. Moreover maybe about which we ought to do in the hall, such as to switch off cellular phones, not to take video or pictures and so on. Last week I have been to Vienna to see a concert, I found very interesting words on the ticket for the concert; in a frame at the right corner, it is written "Valid as a public transportation ticket in Vienna".

コンサートのチケットには普通どんなことが書かれているでしょう？もちろんコンサートの日時とアーティスト名、席番号などはもちろん、コンサートホールでしてはいけないことなどが書かれているでしょう。携帯電話のスイッチを切ることや、ビデオや写真などを撮ってはいけないことなど。先日ウィーンまでコンサートに行って来たのですが、そのチケットに大変面白いことが書いてあったので紹介します。表の隅の囲いの中には、”ウィーンで交通機関の切符として有効”と書かれています。



On the other side of the ticket, it is described in detail that "This ticket is valid for public transportation from two hours before and until after six hours of the opening time." In most cities in Europe, as far as I know, we can just by a ticket only at once, even if we change transportation measures (subways, trams, busses and trains) except for taxis and planes. What I think it very kind is that the valid time is considered to include also dinner time after the concert.

裏面には詳細に、”コンサートの開始時間2時間前からその6時間後まで、公共交通機関の切符として有効です。”と書かれています。こちらの交通機関は、だいたいどこでも、手段が変わっても（タクシー、飛行機は除く）一枚の切符で済ますことができます。地下鉄、路面電車、バス、電車など。とても親切だと思うのは、コンサートが終わってから食事をする時間がちゃんと考慮されていることです。

I just remember a scene in Tokyo this year. A station attendants in subway station grumbled that I did not pass a right ticket gate when changed stations to the other company's, Eidan to Toei subway and was blocked by the automatic gate. What a service was that! How can it be so difficult to control tickets automatically, while most of ticket gates in bigger cities in Japan are fully automated. (In Japan, it is usually not possible to ride on a train without once feeding a ticket through a machine. We should take the ticket from the machine after passing the gate. And it is also not possible to get out of a station without giving a ticket to a machine. Machines at ticket gates control, if the ticket is valid. ) But the description which gate I should have passed... of course I noticed after that but there are so many information on the walls and so many people walking around me, it is almost not possible to my path to the gate. I should have known that in advance. Which gate to take is written only in Japanese, there is no chance for foreigners.

今年、東京の地下鉄で、都営線と営団線の乗換えで正しい改札を通らなかったときに駅員に文句を言われたことを思い出して、いったい何がサービスなのかを考えたことがありますが、この違いはいったい何なのでしょう？日本のように自動改札が発達しているのであれば、そこまで自動処理ができないものでしょうか？もちろん後でどの改札を通らなければいけなかったのかが書かれていたのに気がつきましたが、あれほどたくさんの人と一緒に動いているときに急に進路など変えることはできません。最初からそのことを知らなければほとんど無理といってもいいでしょう。それにどこの改札を通るかは、日本語でしか表記がしてないのです。外国人旅行客には困りものです。

What I think it very kind of the system here is that we do not need to take out coins nor maybe wallet when we change trains or busses, once having buy a ticket to a destination. Of course when we buy a ticket, we can also use a back card which withdraws money directly from our bank accounts. It is said that tourists should take some amount of money with, when they travel in Japan. The biggest reason for that is to use JR (Japan Railways) or subways.....

こちらのシステムがいいと思うのは、乗換えごとに小銭を用意する必要がないことです。最初に終点まで切符を買ってしまえば、財布すら出す必要がありません。もちろん購入時にはカードが使えます。（キャッシュカードではなく、銀行口座から勝手に引き出してくれるものです。）日本に旅行に行くときにはまとまった現金が必要だと言われていますが、一番の原因はJRや地下鉄の利用のためなんですよね。。。
