The Day of Liberation ヨーロッパが解放された日

"May 8th is a very important day in Europe. It is the memorial day that they won the war against Totalitarianism and were free from that 69 years ago.... "

「5月8日はヨーロッパにとって大切な日だ。69年前に全体主義との戦いに勝利して自由を勝ち取った記念の日。....」

That was the speech by the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Werner Faymann on the stage.

これがオーストリア連邦首相、ヴェルナー・ファイマンのステージでの演説。

In front of Hofburg king's palace, a dome stage was built and lots of people were there to celebrate/enjoy the festival. For the festival, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra was ready to play Beethoven's Symphony No.5. Needless to say, this concert was free.

王宮前の広場にドーム型のステージが設営され、この日を祝うためか、お祭りを楽しむためか、たくさんの人が集まった。ウィーン交響楽団が、ベートーヴェンの運命を演奏するためにステージに陣取る。もちろんこのコンサートは無料。

I bought a piece of pretzel and beer, was standing among people and linstened to speeches of vice mayer Maria Vassilakou, the representative of concentration camp in Mauthausen, federal chancellor Werner Faymann and so on.

ブレーツェルとビールを買って、人混みの中に立ちながら、ウィーン副市長のマリア・ヴァシラコウ、マウトハウゼンの強制収用所所長、それから連邦首相のヴェルナー・ファイマンなどの、この日を祝うスピーチを聞く。

Having listened so many times that they said "free from Totalitarism" and they won the democracy, I just wondered. After the war, Germany pushed all the guilt to Nazi, although Hitler was elected by German ciitzens in democratical way. Hitler came to Austria in 1938, but he was somehow welcomed. This is the historical fact. I have seen pictures that lot of people gathered at square of cities with the Nazi flag in their hand to listen to Hitler's speech. But Austria tried to wipe this history by declaration of Permanent Neutrality. Even now, some strees in Vienna have been originally named after famous people and it will be renamed when their contributed to Nazi party was discovered.

演説で何度も「全体主義からの解放」とか民主主義を勝ち取ったとか聞いていたら不思議に思えてきた。戦後ドイツはすべての責任をナチスに押し付けたが、彼は民主的にドイツ国民に選挙でえらばれて当選した。ヒトラーは1938年にオーストリアに来て併合したが、いくらか歓迎されていた。これは歴史の事実だ。ヒトラーの演説を聞くために、町の中央広場にナチの旗を手にして集まった民衆の写真も見たことがある。でもオーストリアは永世中立を謳い、この歴史を覆い隠そうとした。今でも、もともと有名人に因んで名づけられた通りの名前が、彼らのナチス党への関与が発覚する度に変更されている。

When I talk with European, they would take Japan as a member of the Axis with Germany and Italy. Most of people do not know what happened in Asia then and believe without doubt that Japan should have done something similar in Asia what Germany or Italy did. They do not know that Japanese government was against Nazi policy about racial discrimination and helped Judes  into Manchuria who had been escaping from Nazi's persecution in Europe ignoring Nazi's accusation not to give them over.

We have to know in advance what happened and how they European would think to communicate with them properly. Until now I told some Europeans that Japan was against Nazi policy. After the War, Hitler killed himself and Mussolini was executed. Showa Tenno traveled all through Japan to encourage citizens. This tells the difference of the relationship clearly; relationship between Tonno and Japanese citizens, and Ruler and European citizens.

ヨーロッパ人と話をすれば、彼らの頭の中には日本はドイツとイタリアの仲間。当時アジアで日本が何をしていたのかは知らないが、きっとドイツやイタリアと同じようなことをしたんだろうと考えているのが分かる。当時日本がナチスの人種差別に反対しており、満州に避難してきたユダヤ人をドイツに避難を受けながらも人道的な立場から匿ったこと。ユダヤ人はそれをちゃんと知っていたから、昭和天皇の葬儀はイスラエルから出席があったことなど、知っている人はほとんどいない。

何が起こったのかを事前に知っておき、ヨーロッパの人間がどう考えるかを知らないと会話は噛み合わない。そうやって日本はナチスの政策には反対だったんだという話をこれまでに何度もした。戦後ヒトラーは自殺をし、ムッソリーニは処刑された。昭和天皇は日本中を回って国民を励ました。天皇と日本国民の関係が如何にヨーロッパの支配者と民衆の関係と違うのかを如実に物語っている。

Then the concert had started. Many people were standing near the stage, and more people were sitting on the lawn in the park very relaxed. It was a very cosy night.

そしてコンサートが始まった。たくさんの人はステージの近くて立って聞いているが、もっと大勢の人たちは芝生の上に座って寛いでいる。とても気持ちのいい夜だった。

Kaiware daikon sprout カイワレ大根

I was asked to cook sushi this time at my regular bistro. I always told Ewa that I do not want to cook anything which people can go somewhere to buy. But she was stubborn and insisted this time that she wants sushi. So I thought of making Temaki (selfrolled) sushi. In the supermarket I cannot find kaiware daikon, I ordered seeds from Germany. This box with 150g seeds is 4.5 Euro.

常連のビストロで今回は寿司を作れという話になった。エヴァにはいつも、どこかに行って買えるようなものだったら作らないと言っているんだが、今回は頑固に寿司が食いたいと言う。そこで手巻きすしならと。スーパーではカイワレ大根は見つからないので、ドイツから種を取り寄せる。この１５０g入りの箱で4.５ユーロ。

The weather was not very fine and the seeds did not grow well, but in three days with sunshine, it started to grow slowly. Actually I have to cook for about 12 to 13 people, I wonder if it might be enough.. Definitely not.

天気が良くなかったのでなかなか芽を出さなかったが、この3日間のいい天気のおかげで少しづつ育ってきた。実際12～3人かそれ以上の人に振る舞わないといけないが、これで足りるのか、かなり疑問。

Keio Wagner Society Orchestra 慶應義塾ワグネル・ソサィティオーケストラ

A friend of mine, who works for UNO gave me tickets for a concert by a Japanese orchestra. One of the oldest Japanese amateur orchestra came to play in Musikverein, and this was one of their performances in Europe beside Munich, Prague and Budapest.

国連で働いている友人の一人が、日本のオーケストラのコンサート券をくれた。日本でも一番古い、アマチュアオーケストラなのだそうな。そのバンドがヨーロッパコンサートツアー（ミュンヘン、プラハ、ブダペスト）、でウィーンの楽友協会で演奏してくれた。

Very many Japanese were there, some can be all the way from Japan.

たくさん日本人が来ていた。 日本から来ていた人たちもいただろう。

Japanese look much younger than European in general, a man sat behind me talked to his friends by him if band members might be around 16 and great performance for their age.

一般に日本人は西欧人よりも若く見えるためか、後ろに座っていた男性は隣の人たちと、バンドのメンバーは16歳くらいなんじゃないかと話をしていた。若いのに大したもんだって。

Audience did not move when the last one finished. The conductor repeated coming out and in, waving to audiences while hand clapping continued. It was a great performance.

最後の曲が終わった後、観客からの拍手が続いている間、指揮者は何度も何度も舞台から出たり入ったりして、観客の拍手に応えていた。素晴らしい演奏でした。

Commuting allowance 通勤手当

I posted about this issue almost a year ago. From the human resource department we were asked how much it would cost to travel to office from home. And chairman of the union gathered information which kind of tickets every commuters can buy cheaply. Each commuter would buy the ticket and the government would pay for that.

この件については一年近く前に投稿した。人事課から、家から会社に車での費用を聞かれ、そして組合長もどういうチケットが一番や安く買えるかといった情報を集めていた。これを元に個々人がチケットを買い、国がそれに対して補助を出すというものだった。

However, it turned out that it will be carried out totally different way by the government; there is a commuter's calculator in government homepage, each commuter should use that to settle amount of allowance. The reason why the government would promote this should be that they raise the allowance and want commuters use more public transportation to avoid such problems like exhaust gas or traffic jams.

しかしながら、結果的には全く違った方法で実施されることになった。政府のホームページにある、通勤距離計算器を使って、手当ての額を決めるということになる。もちろん、政府がこれを決めている理由としては、手当てを厚くして多くの人に公共交通機関をより使いやすくさせ、排気ガス、渋滞などの問題の解決の一助にしようというものだろう。


The calculator did not actually work properly. We need to give our home address and of office, then normal working time from and to. And for each, we will have a result if the travel is within pleasant/appropriate range. I have almost never heard that Austrian people would commute the same as I do, it cannot be found pleasant journey any way.

実際にはその計算器まともに計算してくれない。家と会社の住所を入力し、通常の仕事開始、終了時間を入力する。その結果としてそれぞれの旅程が妥当（居心地がいい）ものかという判断と、突き当たりの手当てがはじき出される。僕と同じように通勤しているオーストリア人など聞いたこともないから、居心地がいいと言われるはずがない。

According to the calculator, l  I need three hours to travel to office from home, and return in two hours 20 minutes which is exactly I need. For the way to the office, I would take a train which does not exist.
 
計算器曰く、家から会社には3時間半ほど掛かるのに、帰りは実際に掛かる時間の2時間20分。また会社に行くのに、実際には存在しない時間の電車に乗ることになっている。

Any way, my commuting allowance was 306 Euro per month. Annual ticket of the train and subway costs almost 2065 Euro, so I will get 134 Euro per month for my effort to wake up early in the morning and sleep in the train. That amount was deducted from my tax pay from February's salary.

そういうわけで、月当たりの通勤手当が３０６ユーロになった。鉄道の年間券と地下鉄のチケットを合わせたものが２０６５ユーロくらいになるから、毎月134ユーロを早起きやら電車での睡眠ご苦労様手当てとしてもらうことになった。2月の給料からその額だけ納税額が少なくなっていた。

Cooking course 料理教室

One day, I was asked by the owner of a Chinese restaurant in neighbourhood where I would deliver my natto from time to time, if I could show how to cook some Japanese food in Buddhism temple in 15th district. I may not use any meat or eggs, 100% vegetarian food. I said ok. This restaurant would cook something out of menu all the time and ask me only 10 Euro including some glasses of wine and/or beer. No way to say no.

ある日、ちょくちょく作った納豆を持っていく近所の中華レストランの店長に、15区にある仏教寺で日本料理の料理教室をしてくれないかと頼まれた。肉も卵も一切ダメ。１００％ベジタリアン。いいよと言う。この店はメニューにないものを適当に作ってくれ、ワインやらビールも飲ませてくれていつも10ユーロしか金を取らない。ダメと言えるわけがない。

At the temple they would hold cooking course once a month or so, but they wanted to do something different this time.There were 5 "students" and I had to prepare also for temple people. I prepared the recipe in German for white coated spinach and tofu hamburg.

お寺では月に一回くらい料理教室をしているらしいが、いつも中華でどうも飽きてきた模様。何か別のものをということになったようだ。５人の生徒が来て、それにお寺の人の分も踏まえた量を準備する。 ほうれん草の白和えに和風豆腐ハンバーグのレシピを事前にドイツ語で準備してきた。

Nobody knows how Japanese would cook. They have never seen konbu, konnyaku, shimeji and enoki mushroom, mirin and potato starch, I explained for each what they are. Then I showed them how to make soup base from konbu, then let them smell the soup before taking konbu out of the soup.

全員日本の料理作法など知らない。昆布、こんにゃく、しめじ、エノキ茸、味醂、片栗粉などこれまでに見たこともないから、順を追ってそれぞれどんなものか説明する。また昆布だしのとり方を見せ、昆布を取り上げる前に実際に匂いを嗅がせてみる。

We started to cook white coated spinach first. We had Chinese cooking knives and many participants wondered at first, but they managed to cut vegetables in thin stick. I explained the movement of left hand, the other one with cooking knife. I gathered their cut vegetables all and put them in a wok, then mixed with spinach and then tofu. I added roasted sesame in it, then the first dish is finished.

ほうれん草の白和えから始める。用意されていたのが中国包丁だったせいか、みんな最初戸惑っていたようだったが、野菜の細切りも何とかこなしていた。一応包丁を持たない方の左手の動きを説明して見せる。みんなの切った野菜をまぜ、大きな中華鍋の中でほうれん草とまぜ、豆腐と和える。そこに炒りごまを入れて混ぜてこれで一品目は完成。

The second dish was hamburg out of tofu. I had never cooked this without any meat and wondered if it can easily be the shape. First I let them cut vegetables which we put in tofu, then gathered and cooking in a wok with some seasonings. Mixed with tofu and added starch, it hardly become a shape to bake in a pan. Actually I wrote the amount of starch much less than it should be. We had a big oven in the kitchen, so the restaurant owner advised me to cook in the oven.

二品目は豆腐のハンバーグ。肉なしで豆腐のハンバーグを作ったことがなかったので、形にまとまるか心配だった。最初にみんなに豆腐の中に入れる野菜を切ってもらい、それを集めて中華鍋で痛めながら下味をつける。 豆腐と混ぜ片栗粉を入れるがなかなかまとまらない。実際にはメモしていた量が実際よりもはるかに少なかったせいだった。中華レストランの店長が、オーブンがあるからそっちで調理すればと言ってくれるので、それに従う。

Then I asked all to wash lettuce, tomatoes for the decoration. I made ponzu, this is the mixture of soy sauce, vinegar and lemon juice, then I cooked shimeji mushroom, peas and bean sprouts in a pan in the ponzu. Students were decorating plates with lettuce and tomatoes. We put tofu in the middle of plates, then grated daikon radish on the tofu, then pour the ponzu sauce from the top.

みんなにレタスとトマトを洗って皿に盛るように頼む。醤油、酢とレモン汁からポン酢を作り、しめじ、サヤエンドウともやしをポン酢といっしょにプライパンで煮てソースを作る。生徒達がお皿にレタスとトマトを盛り付けてくれたところで、オーブンから豆腐を取り出し、卸大根をのせ、その上からソースを掛けて出来上がり。

Tofu should have been much stiffer and more cooked, but I was not able to do more. The Buddhist priest of the temple seemed to like the light and less salty dish of the day.

豆腐はもっと固くて火が通っていた方がよかったが、どうにもならなかった。お寺の和尚さんは軽くて塩味の少ない、今回の料理が気に入っておられたようだった。

Gold Glove ゴールデングラブ

First time I got a prize for baseball. Very surprised.

初めて野球で賞をもらった。本人が一番驚いている。

Rice 米

My uncle mentioned in my previous post sent me 10kg rice. His rice has a very high quality, tastes good even in two years.

前回の記事の叔父が米を１０kg送ってくれた。叔父の作る米は一級品で、古古米になってもおいしく食べられる。

Inside the parcel he wrote thank you. I did not do something special, but he should be happy that his wife would be able to Vienna of her dream.


箱の内側にはいろいろありがとうと書いてあった。別に大したことをした訳じゃないが、叔母が憧れだったウィーンに連れて行ってあげられたのが嬉しかったんだろう。
