Fog season 霧の季節

It means that autumn arrived in Austria. Along the river especially in early hours, it is alway foggy. When I woke up today, it was already very foggy.

霧が深くなるとオーストリアにも秋が来たのを感じる。特に川沿いの地域では朝方特に霧が深い。今日も朝起きると霧がかかっていた。


I found a duck and made some pictures, then other 10 or more gathered under the bridge expecting something to eat from me, perhaps.

鴨を見つけて写真を撮っていたら他の鴨も橋のところにやってきた。多分なにか食べ物でももらえると思っているんだろう。


It was not very cold, rather milder than two weeks ago (then it snowed in mountain area above 1200m) This gloomy weather is the typical Austrian weather this time at least in this area.

特に寒いわけではなかった。２週間前に１２００ｍ以上の山で雪が降ったときからすれば、むしろ暖かかった。少なくともオーストリアのこの地域では、これがこの季節の典型的な天気だ。


Today I went to buy something, miso and rice, because the rice cooker I ordered from Japan arrived a few days ago. It has been so long time that I did not cook miso soup nor omlette. Of course it tasted like Japanese food :)

今日は特別なものを買いに出かけた。味噌に米。数日前に日本から頼んだ炊飯器が届いたばかり。ずいぶん長いこと味噌汁もオムレツも作ってなかった。もちろん日本の味がした。



By the way, I heard until now that many Japanese said in front of foreigners that in Japan there are four seasons. Even in desert area there are four seasons but in different way, you should not say in loud or try to discuss with them. Such the discussion is non-sense because the speakers do not know both countries. But that we can eat very many different kinds of fish in season to season in Japan, this is what is very unique and is absolutely true :)

ところで、かなり沢山の日本人が、外国人を前にして日本を紹介する際に日本には四季があると言う。砂漠の地域でさえ日本とは違った形で四季はある。そういうことを声を大にして討論するのはあまり意味がない、というのはそのどちらも相手の国のことを知らないからだ。少なくとも言えるのは、日本では季節によって沢山のいろんな魚が食べられること。それだけは間違いなく事実である。

Under construction2 工事中２

Construction site finally came to my house.
From my window I can see standing floor for attaching heat isolation sheet on outside wall. I have seen that for other neighbor houses for long time and finally it became my concern. Also the roof will be renewed.

工事現場がついに移ってきた。窓からは断熱？遮熱？材を取り付ける足場が見える。これまでずっと近所の家にあるのを見てきたが、ようやく人事ではなくなった。屋根瓦も新しく葺き替えられる。



When I see from my window, I can see houses already finished their renovation and still in constuction.

窓から外を見ると、既に工事が終わって新しくなったところと、未だに工事中のところが見える。




Beside this, underground storige area is now under renovation.
I do not know how long it lasts, well I was somehow lucky to find an apartment which would be renewed very soon after I came in.

その上、地価の物置も現在工事中。どれだけ時間が掛かるのか分からないけれど、引っ越してきてすぐに新しくなるのはラッキーだった。

Weekend

On weekends I often go into the forest nearby and then to the city square for a coffee, cake or beer. It has been so cold since last week, but this Sunday it was fine and sunny, I traced my usual route.

週末は近くの森に出かけることが多い。それから町の中心の広場でコーヒーにケーキ、ビールを楽しむ。１週間ほどとても寒かったがこの日曜は晴れて日も差していたので、いつものコースを辿る。





Maybe because of the cold week, leaves have already fallen and piled up on the ground. After the rain many slugs (so orange) are commonly seen.

この寒かった週のせいか、落ち葉がたくさん。雨の後にはいつものようにナメクジもたくさん。



About half an hour walk through the forest I get to the other side of the river then to the square.

30分ほど森を歩いた後、橋を川の反対側に渡りそれから町の中心へ向かう。



I always take books with me. One of "my reading room" is tiny space for two people at window in a cafe near the square.

いつも本を持ち歩く。広場の近くにあるいつものカフェの窓際にある２人用のこじんまりした席がお気に入りの読書スペース。



I also found many chestnuts on the grounds, it is much earlier than last year to see them. It is not the same kind what we have in Japan, I once tried to cook chestnut rice in vain... it does not taste how I imagine.

栗がたくさん落ちていた。去年よりもずいぶん早い。日本の栗とは違って、一度栗御飯を炊いてみたが思ったような味がしなかった。

Harvest festival 収穫感謝祭

It was slightly raining in the morning and was very cold on Sunday, the harvest festival was held at city square. When I arrived there, people in traditional costumes sat and listened to the speech of the organizer. Women took gold or black hats in strange shape.

朝から小雨の降る、寒い日曜日に収穫祭が街の広場で行われた。会場に着いた頃には沢山の人がお決まりの衣装を着て主催者のスピーチに耳を傾けていた。女性は金色や黒の変わった形の帽子をかぶっている。



Around the stage where a musical band sat and played, there were lots of huts built to sell Schnaps (spilits out of apple, apricot and etc.) Krapfen (donuts with jam inside) and any other from farmers. Old men invited participants a ride on a carriage having a small glass for Schnaps within the square. Children were playing on the pile of straw.

楽団のいるステージの周囲にはシュナップス（リンゴやあんずなどから作る蒸留酒）、クラップフェン（ジャムの入ったドーナッツ）そのほか農家のものを売る小屋が建っている。年配の男性が収穫祭に参加した人を馬車に案内しているが、その手にはシュナップスのグラスが。子供たちは積みわらの上で遊んでいる。




I had some glasses of Schnaps and beer, then huge Krapfen.

シュナップスとビールを少々、それにクラップフェンを頂いた。

Volksmusikfest フォーク音楽祭

I sometimes go to an Italian restaurant in the district Steyrdorf. This time again, I happened to be there on the day of the local festival. This district used to be the center of Steyr more than 30 years ago, there were lots of shops along the narrow street. There were more shops built at the square, a shopping center was built six years ago. I personally like this district because of the street built of stone, and the view of slopes. Recently some shop keepers, bar keepers try to attract people, hold some small events and today's event is one of those. When I got there, there were already lots of people sitting at table outside, musicians were preparing for their play.

たまにシュタイヤードルフと呼ばれる地区にあるイタリアレストランに行く。今回もたまたま地域のイベントの日に出くわした。この地区は３０年以上前シュタイヤーの中心で、狭い通り沿いにたくさんの店が並んでいた。しかし、その後お店が中央広場に面したところにたくさん建てられ、６年前にはショッピングセンターも別の地区に建てられた。個人的には石畳の道と坂のある風景が気に入っている。最近はお店やバーの経営者がことあるたびにイベントを開いて人を呼ぶ努力をしているが、今日のイベントもどうもそのひとつらしい。レストランに着いたら既に沢山の人が外のテーブルについていて、演奏家たちは楽器の準備をしていた。



One of the most famous Austrians, Josef Werndl is from Steyrdorf. He founded a rifle company and when Edison invented light bulb, he also started to produce generators and bulbs. Houses in Steyrdorf was lighted with electric light bulbs for the first time in the world in 1884. And this company became Steyrwerk and then Steyr-Daimler-Puch, an Austria automotive company, where I am working for now. I like the whole history and I am sure that this makes the city Steyr something different, not just the city is the oldest in upper Austria.

もっとも有名なオーストリア人の一人、ヨゼフ＝ヴェァンドルはシュタイヤードルフの出身である。彼はライフル生産会社を設立し、エジソンが電球を発明した時には、すぐさま発電機と電球の生産を始めた。シュタイヤードルフの家々は1884年に世界で始めての電気による街灯で照らされた。そしてこの会社が後にシュタイヤーヴェァク、そして自動車会社シュタイヤー＝ダイムラー＝プフとなるが、その会社が今の職場である。この一連の歴史はとても興味深い。それがシュタイヤーを、ただアッパーオーストリア州で一番古い街というだけではなく、間違いなくさらに別のものにしている。



Yes, European day is long. I really enjoyed eating and some nice wine, festival goes on and on until very late...

ヨーロッパの日は長い。おいしいものとワインを堪能し、そしてお祭りは遅くまで続く。。。

Under Construction1 工事中１

Since last week the construction site came to the building where I live. Because of the renovation of the apartment room below mine, I can also hear boring the walls, scraping ceiling, setting up bathroom and so on with vibration. Very interesting to know is, Austrian people start working from or just before 7 AM. Once I saw a people working at truck at 6:30. I just wonder if anybody will not complain it. My construction report continues...

一週間前から工事現場がこちらの建物に移ってきた。下の階の部屋でも部屋の完全改装をしているので、壁に穴開けたり、天井をはがしたり、バスルームの水周りを工事したりする音が振動を伴って聞こえてくる。面白いのはこちらの人はもう７時から工事を始めること。一度６時半にトラックを動かしている人を見たこともある。近所の人はだれも苦情を言わないのかと不思議になる。工事のレポートは続きます。

Construction 工事

This is the third month since I moved into my current apartment. I heard that this year is the 30th year from the last renovation of the building. The apartment where I live now was built before WWII, when Steyr Daimler Puch was growing fast to build weapons, tanks or military vehicles and the company built apartments in this district for her workers. Actually I am working in the company now, now the company does not produce any product like decades ago.

今のアパートに越してきて３ヶ月になる。今年は前回の改装工事後ちょうど３０年目になるらしい。今住んでいるところは第２次大戦前に建てられたもので、シュタイヤー＝ダイムラー＝プフという会社がライフルや戦車、軍用車などを製造しながら成長しつつある時期に、社員が住むための住宅街も同時に開発したものだ。実はそこが今の職場だが、半世紀以上も前のようには武器や軍用車は生産していない。

Due to recent high oil price, more people are very conscious about heating cost: it is a trend overall to keep the house isolated from outside, concretely saying, building or attaching Styrofoam on the outside wall or on the back of the roof to prevent heat from inside escaping. The construction of my apartment has not still begun, but it is at the moment really cool inside. This is the European summer, the sun shine is very strong but it is very cool under the shadow. 最近のオイル高で、暖房費にとても気を使う人が多くなってきた。そのせいか、最近の流行は家の熱遮断工事、具体的に言えば発泡スチロールを家の外壁や屋根に取り付けるというもの。この工事はまだ終わったわけではないが、今でも家の中は十分涼しい。これがヨーロッパの夏。太陽光はとても強くても日陰は涼しい。実は写真はお向かいさん:)



Every time I see construction site here, I think how easily they build houses. Of course there is almost no fear for earthquake here, when I remember the situation in Japan it is completely different. Here it seems like building a toy house. Piling up bricks and make all walls first then cover with roof structure. In Japan on the other hand, first of all pillar and sub structures before wall will be attached.

毎回工事現場を見るたびに思うことだが、こちらの家がいかに簡単に建てられているかということだ。もちろん日本のように地震の心配がないから事情が全く違うのはしょうがない。ここでは家がおもちゃの家のように建てられていく。レンガを積み上げて外壁を作り、それから屋根の部分の構造物をその上に乗せる。一方日本では、まず柱とそれに付随する構造物。それからやっと壁が取り付けられる。

It is quite usual to renovate old house and use the base structure for long time here, in Japan it used to be said that it is difficult because of the high humidity. However, there is the oldest wooden structure in the world in Japan! I know there are some cunstuctors that propose customers for their new idea to maintain their houses for longer life, maybe it takes a bit long time until it will be a common idea over there.

こちらでは昔から古い家の改装はごく一般的。日本では以前は湿気のせいで家が長持ちしないと言われてきたが、なにをなにを。日本には世界でも一番古い木造建築があるではないか。住宅会社が家をメンテナンスしながら長く使うという考えを提案しつつあるが、こうした考えがごくごく一般的になるまでにはしばらく時間が掛かるだろう。
