Energy matter

Recently I can hear very often that my colleagues are talking about heating cost at home. As the oil price raises, they get more interest in how to reduce heating cost during winter season, considering introducing new system such as natural gas, solar system, earth heat or combination of them. Popular heating system here is called central heating, oil circulates through oil pile equipped all through the building or house, it is possible to warm each room just by letting the oil into heat radiator in the room. Therefore it can never happen like in Japan, that bedrooms, toilets or bathrooms are cold like ice. I have once told others about my home in Japan. It is usual to ware sweater at home when cold. Of course with socks on. We would just let the room warm only where people are, and in the room almost nobody, it is close to the outside temperature. It would surprise almost all people here. Of course the climate in Austria is as same as in Hokkaido island or maybe colder, it should be quite reasonable. On the other hand, solar energy is not so popular for personal use as in Japan.

They might have thought that Japanese brings inhumane life to have to come back home and bear icy living room. However, when I talked about bath, they got very interested; "Until every family member finishes, they would not drain the water in bath tub. A pump to lead the water in the bath tub to the washing machine is available and they use it next day." With usual washing machine available here, we can set the water temperature up to 90 degrees according to dirtiness. The water from Japanese bath tub next day is still somehow warm, there is no waste. I feel that Japanese is a sort of people that would try to use everything effectively and hate just to abandon. But on the other hand, vending machines at night, convenience stores. Maybe European would think it too much.

Japan has pursued just convenience. At the same time could the people get too lazy contrarily? Now could it be the time to consider again? Japanese are good at spend same amount of resource effectively, but they also broadened their life style to accept apparent futility? It is surely impossible that every one on the earth can share the same life convenience. Based on the 100 % reliance of natural resources to foreign countries, it should be also necessary to consider to change life style to appeal Japanese energy saving technology to other countries.

Japan, the Country of 3 Hs 1 3H

I have a feeling that my eyes often catch articles about Japan in recent newspapers or magazines. Japan might have not been a country for European to travel to. They are desperate for sun lights and they head south in summer. But it seems that it changes gradually. Of course, it might be reasonable to think that most of them have visited every European country and want new stimulation. Addition to Japanese cars, Koreans with low price and high quality sell well these days and existence of China as a cheap products and work force provider cannot be neglected within the EU and starts to influence European industry negatively. Then general people would be interested in and curious for Asian countries. "Sushi" would stride as a representative of Japan and number of sushi bars increases greatly, it gets quite common to eat in Chinese restaurant with chopsticks, and for businessmen, they have more opportunities to travel to on business until their companies would build their own factories or developing block. It is often seen a plan of package tour in newspaper to travel through big cities especially in China or in Japan, still not so much in Korean. Moreover they also introduce custom and cultural difference in the weekend special edition for traveling. Especially since last year it gets more common. I have also found an article about "Japanese sleeping culture" more than once, that every Japanese can drop asleep everywhere.

The usual explanation about Japan in such articles are "a country of wonder". I myself use the word often to ask people around me for the project with Japanese customers that Japanese are aliens. This time I found the article in a newspaper very similar but in opposite way. The title of the article is "A country of 3 Hs, bowing is citizen's sport". These 3 Hs do not mean Japanese "H", but High-Tech, Höflichkeit(politeness) and Hygiene. Japanese people tend to take first letters of each of three words such as 3 Hs, tall, highly educated and high income for ideal man for women. These 3 Hs in the newspaper get the point straight and can be clearly distinguished from China or Korea. Needless to say about high-tech, Toyota is now about to be the world biggest automobile company in the world. Top ranks of the automotive producers whose cars have statistically less problems are occupied by Japanese companies. In the field of digital camera, fame of Japanese producers is apparently stable, for house appliances, it is so usual that many people do not even know that it is by Japanese companies. Politeness of Japanese are refereed to the business-card-exchanging tradition. This ceremony became a standard in industrialized countries. They do not just mimic Japanese style, but they think it also very efficient to exchange their cards before starting meeting and make the communication smooth. The last one, hygiene. I read many articles that treat "washlet". Naturally it also contains the context of high-tech. Approaching the toilet, its lid would be opened automatically, put out BGM for the people that mind to be heard from outside, and additionally, the toilet seat is warm! There are many buttons in the line and one can adjust the position of the water head and water pressure, then dries. For women there attached a button for bidet. W O N D E R. That taxi doors will be opened by driver automatically, because Japanese would regard it dirty. In the article I found also lines saying that Japanese would be surprised to be asked for hand shaking because of their idea that it is not very clean. I can agree that many Japanese people are addicted to antibacterial goods and thought that some people would hate to open taxi door by themselves. However, I was not able to agree to the speculation about hand shaking, I sent an e-mail to the newspaper.

Rich Dad

I wonder that I first read the book about five years ago, when I felt something very disgusting. I thought as if the author just laughs at whoever works earnestly. Of course just to work earnestly does not always make sense, nobody can find hot spring without researching where to dig. However, his book advises how to get much unearned income and it is important to get out of "rat race" to spend a rich life. I just felt it a typical American idea and they love money games. Maybe such idea may not be very special nor odd in America.

When compared among European, American and Japanese if they want to keep working after pension, very many Japanese would prefer to continue to work after retirement. In Europe the word "pensioner" sounds very cozy, but in Japan nobody would introduce themselves as a pensioner. It comes just from an idea how to find own value in the society and it differs very much from Euro-American one.

Recent Japanese news is full of the issue of Livedoor. The media criticizes politicians, political parties or even other media that cheered the former president of Livedoor. But how can a man just criticize those who cheers him after knowing that Japanese pension system is almost broken up. There should have been many people that started buy stocks to multiply their pocket money. If a politician says loud, "any person should work earnestly", then she should be just a liar. It is the politician that have been making fool on citizens to plug for daily life.

Pension problem is a common issue in Austria, too. However, the system is completely different from Japanese one. Austrian people must not pay from twenty years old, they can start to pay after starting work. They can receive full payment if they have paid for forty years, then may highly educated people that study in universities do not have the right from the beginning. Engineers especially, there is just degree from master and doctor, when they got a academic title they should already be at youngest 25 years old. Therefore they have to compensate the loss with personal pension. This is the current situation in Austria. It is much healthier than Japanese one. Of course the people should contribute to pension system and if they would refuse to pay, they can also be fined. But still mass media is just trying to find fault with others. I think they do not know what is more important. To work earnestly is important, and to think it very precious is something and admirable, only if everybody does not especially have to work for living after pension time.

Where are you going, Klimt?

The impressionism is well know to Japanese that are not especially interested in fine arts. There should almost be no Japanese that does not know Renoir or Van Goch. It is also well known abroad that Japanese love impressionism. Austria is for Japanese famous, of course because of Vienna or Salzburg, as a city of music, but also precious art collection should not be forgotten. Bruegel in the Art history museum, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt in the Belvedere or in Museum Quarter. Tourism is one of the most important revenue source in Austria, Bruegel, Schiele or Klimt should be prayed all the time.

There was a judgment between the descendant of original possessor of five paintings of Klimt in Austrian treasure box and Austrian nation. These paintings used originally to be possessed by Adel Bloch Bauer and they were condemned illegally by the nation under Nazis time. The court judgment on 16th Jan. was to return these treasure to the original possessor. The portrait should be one of the most impressive paintings in Belvedere to whom once visited there, and it is in the same room where the very famous painting "The kiss" is.

According to experts, these five paintings together would cost about from 120 to 150 million Euro. Especially about this portrait below, they speculate that the price of this painting would exceed "A boy with a flute" by Picasso which has been the most expensive painting in the world. Fascinating touch peculiar by Klimt. The time when it was drawn, Klimt was criticized by society as same as Schiele that his paintings were erotic. I will never feel bored by just sitting and watching the painting for more than 10 minutes as I feel the same with "The kiss". The museum offers a big sofa in front of it.

The first reaction of the government was, it was too expensive to buy them back, but at the same time they recognized that it would be the huge loss for the nation. In recent newspapers, not only national newspapers but also regional one or in popular one, there were articles how the government tried to work with the money. As an art fan, I do not want the collection would be kept separately. I just wish that it would result in a positive end. A drunk had sent a blackmail to Belvedere that the painting would be destroyed to prevent that the paintings would be sent abroad, anyway, if I would be asked, I am ready to pay at least 300 Euro to keep them here.

It was the first week of April when these five paitings were returned to Mrs Maria=Altmann living in Los Angeles who is the niece of the model woman appering in Bloch=Bauer1. She told that these paintings were hung on the living room wall in her house in Switzlernad in her childhood. The value of these five paintings were estimated in the auction as 246 million euros. One of these paintings, "Houses on Atter lakes" (one of the lakes in Salzkammergut famous for its scenery), a museum in upper Austria is trying to buy it back and contacts Mr.Altmann, too. I have written that it is of course sad that a fine collection would be kept separately, however, when they were returned to whom it used to belong, I also feel somehow at ease. (added 04.07.2006)

St.Claus

Santa Claus should play the main role for the Christmas, but here a small angel called Christkindle would take the role. In Germany it is called "Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market)" where people can buy candles or decorations and people can also drink warm wine. In Austria it is called "Christkindel market". It is quite interesting to know that in Russia or in Ukraine they have another heroin besides Santa Claus, "Snow girl", a grand daughter of Santa Claus, wearing blue costume in contrast with Santa Clauses' read. I wonder if the angel (Christkindel) and the snow girl have connection to each other. Well, Santa Claus does not just bring presents but has lots to do.

Paramour Prowler Crucified
Honey Drunk with his Child

And this is the image from the angel Christkindel.

Santa Claus would bring presents to children all over the world and make them happy. He is loved by the children. However, he cannot get any present. He is even made fun of by the angel. Really hard work for him. (It is written, there is nothing for you.) Maybe, in order to comfort such the pity Santa Claus, many children in the world would send him Christmas card to the Christmas Post in Steyr.

Shops on Sundays

There used to be a time in Japan that people enjoyed open discussion programs on TV, there is one in Austria and also invited audience can partly join in the discussion. Well, which kind of topic would interest them? "To open shops on Sundays" The topic can never been discussed or be never taken as a topic for discussion in Japan. The people invited to the discussion were Richard Lugner who cannot be forgotten to talk about business in Austria, the owner of a huge shopping center in the outskirts of Vienna, a person from Viennese tourism association and a representative from the Labor Ministry.

The insistence of the executive officers is as following; "as the EU expands it is meaningful to open shops on Sundays especially in Vienna or region close to the border to other countries to lure more customers. It is strictly limited how long can a person work in a week and it is just an inattentiveness of the Labor Ministry not to allow manager to settle the time table freely. Currently the domestic consumption is about to reach the ceiling, it is necessary to loosen the regulation to attract foreign customers coming to Austria by car. Besides of it, there are possibilities to offer mothers jobs on Sundays that cannot work during week days due to family matter." On the other hand, insistence from opponents. "There is enough time for shopping now. Even if the shopping time would be extended, sales would not greatly improve. It is questionable if the shopkeepers can afford to pay additionally to whom works on weekends." During the discussion, there were no points of view from customer side. Somebody fears if family would be destroyed by working on holidays, and the others insist that the nation should protect families somehow.

They have an idea deep in their original thought, that nobody may work on Sundays. Then they cannot answer directly to the question why there is a problem to comply with the market demand. It is no question that family would be destroyed by working without any holiday, but it seems that they have their own answer from the beginning. They may not work on Sundays. However, there are exceptions. It is quite difficult to hold a discussion with such people. How the people living in such a country would feel when they travel to Japan? Convenience stores opened every time every day, vending machines everywhere...

It happens all the time いつもの

At the time of the year, I always have to think about how I can reduce my overtime work. Our company would basically pay less than 20 hours a year, I have to talk with my boss how I concretely consume them. My current status is 82 hours overtime this year. If I consume the hours in general way, I can have two-week vacation. Many of my colleagues would be surprised when I would say, "82-hour overtime a month would not especially suprise any Japanese." Then they would ask me, "How about their family?"

As far as I observe my colleagues, they always seem to work at "their" pace. It is too natural to go back home regularly, they do not need the word for that. Of course sometimes they have to work overtime, but they do not receive additional pay but have holidays instead afterwords. It is quite natural. They do not especialy have to haste themselves, and customers would not neither. Of course line workers cannot work in such a style, but office workers admit the inconsistant volume of work, they have to adjust their time even through the year and would not be payed monthly for their overtime.

In my last job in Japan, I did not have to check in with my time card before working. They told that every worker has to control by himself, it really means there is no overtime work basically. How long they worked is not controlled but every worker had to report. I did not think that every boss can exactly control how their members are working. They have a "go-home-at-five" day once a week, but it just might cause that they have to work longer on the other day. What I feel here quite important is, how to plan within limited time. Sometimes I have to compromise quality due to time. In Japan, I did not have to. I was able to do until I feel satisfied. I was able to just do that I thought nice to do. But here I have to consider if I may do or not, considering other issues. I wonder if there is any landing point between Japanese way and European way.
