朝早くから、メッセージやSMS,さらには海外から電話で誕生日おめでとうの言葉を受け取った。多くの日本人がそうであるように、この年で誕生日をそれほど意識していない。友人の一人が、いつどこでお祝いをするのかと聞いてきたので、しばらく考えて、じゃあ今日なにかしようと返事をした。こういうことをするのは今回が初めてだ。
Wondering if 8 people for table reservation too much or not, I tried to reserve a table at a beer bar which I often passed by while my training for marathon. It is quite rare to find non-smoking bar in Vienna at all. The law to force any restaurant or cafe to display if it is the place for smokers/non-smokers or if they have a seperate rooms for both. This new law is valid since last June, actually there are very little cafes in the city and they physically cannot create a space only for non-smokers. And for the fear of losing their royal customers, usual cafes chose to label themselves as a place for smokers.
テーブルの予約は8人では多すぎないかと心配をしながら、マラソンの練習のときによく横を通り過ぎるビールバーにテーブルを予約する。ウィーンでは禁煙のバーを探すのは至難の業だ。カフェやレストランで、そこが喫煙者、非喫煙者、もしくは店内が仕切られているかの表示を強制する法律が昨年6月に実効してしばらくになるが、たいていのところは小さなカフェを区切ることはできず、また長年の固定客を失うことを恐れて、喫煙者の場所としてのステッカーを入り口に貼っている。
Instead of my sudden call, some of my friends came to say hello and have some drink with me. This cafe looked like a library, but there were lots of whisky bottles in the shelf. It is quite comfortable to sit and talk with friends. To my surprise, the cafe had only vegan menu, it is quite unusual or even unpossible in Vienna. I have never tried Wiener Schnitzel without using meat. It is similar to modoki-dishes, like shojin-ryori in Kyoto. Honestly it just seems to be a reckless challenge in Vienna; lots of people would like to eat sausages or fatty foods.
突然の呼びかけにもかかわらず、友人の何人かはおめでとうを言いに来てくれて、一緒にビールで乾杯した。このカフェは図書館のようなインテリアだが、本棚にはウィスキーが一杯。座って友人たちと話をするのに本当に居心地がいい。驚いたことにこのカフェ、メニューにベジタリアン用の食べ物しかない。京都の精進料理のようなもどき料理だ。正直、ウィーンでこういうのは無謀な試みだ。ここのたくさんの人はソーセージや脂っこいものを好んで食べる。
Later another friend of mine came who is working in a bar; he knows lots about cocktail or whisky. He opened the thick whisky menu of the cafe and selected shots for me. Glen Grant 15, Laphroaig 10 and some of his favorites. By the time there were 11 people at the table. I recently did not drink whisky at all, I remembered my university time when I used to work in a bar and tried to taste many different kinds of whisky.
しばらくして、バーで働いている友人が店に来た。彼はカクテルにもウィスキーにも詳しい。分厚いウィスキーのメニューを見ながら僕にいくつかショットを薦めてくれた。グレングラント15年、ラフロイグ10年と、彼の好みのウィスキー。このころにはテーブルに11人が座っていた。最近はすっかりウィスキーを飲まなくなったが、学生のころバーで働いていたときに、いろんなウィスキーを試して飲んでいたのを思い出す。
Actually, due to the local rule, I called my friends saying that I will pay all drinks for the day, but friends even paid for my drinks, whisky. We stayed at the bar until the closing time, 2:00 AM, enjoyed some inncent talk. I rarely stay up until so late but it was a great day for me.
実際、ここのローカルルールに則って、みんなを｢飲み物は全部おごりだから｣と言って呼んでいたが、僕の飲み物やウィスキーまでみんなが払ってくれた。閉店の2時まで店にいて、なんでもない話をみんなで楽しんだ。こんなに遅くまで起きていることは稀だが、素晴らしい日だった。
