Sparverein

There is a very unique system in Austria bars in country side which is called "Sparverein", so to say "money saving group". On the wall of bars where percentage of regular customers is over 70 or more percents, there would be such the box with many slits with persons' name beneath. To explain how it works, a customer would come and have some drink or snack and he would put some money from the wallet in the box. This amount will be gathered monthly and would be sent to the local bank. And they will be run in the program with relatively high interest. In general, there are some programs with duration of 12, 24 or 36 months. At the moment the ones with interest 4 to 4.5% are common.

Today was the refund day of the Sparverein. Most of faces I saw were familiar but there are some which I have never seen before. We were invited to meal which we had selected from three variations. I put all the money I received last year again into the box, so this is the amount out of two years. I come to the bar once or twice a week, most of other customers are shift workers at BMW Motors or MAN truck. Some people of high class in Austria would say that workers are uneducated and somehow make fool of them, but they are working every day with foreigners in the production lines and are generous to the "difference", I feel that they are very kind and open at least to me. I have lived in Steyr for 5 years already, this bar is one of the places where I feel relaxed. I do not have to care for others unnecessarily. I tried hard to communicate with local people and often came here, it is a pleasure for me that they would treat me as a person on the same side.

And then, how much was the amount. 660 Euro. Today's meal which costs about 10 Euro was free due to the interest. I again registered the program for the next year and I paied 2 Euro for that. I did not win by that. I took 600 Euro from the envelop and put it into my box again. It was the first time to see 500Euro bill.

Perchten

The origine of St.Claus, the holiday of St.Nikolaus on 6th December. This day we are supposed to eat cholocate. A several days before the Nikolaus day, a parade by Perchten, it is similar to Japanese Namahage, was carried out in Steyr. Recently Coca-Cola truck would appear in the city square and I felt it mismatch to this old historical city. Two years ago, they started Perchtenlauf (parade of Perchten) and is very loved by citizens and seems to be accepted as annual event. In other Austrian cities, Krampus is more popular. Precisely they say that within Krampus there is good and evil, while Perchten is only evil.

Religion

I found a newspaper article the other day that Spanish court brought a sentence of a 40,000-year prison. It is quite familiar that American court would say 150 or 230-year prison for murders. But this one is far beyond by figures. As commonly discussed with such punishment is capital punishment. On the background of such an absurd judgment there is a warm merciful idea that human being may never kill other human being that God created. However, who on the earth in this current world would believe in God as people used to? After the World War II, people in many of Western Europe would not visit Churches, especially in Scandinavian countries. So-to-say this is being skeletonized.

On this point, it is quite interesting and impressive that Chinese and Japanese can share the similar view. People do not have to promise human right to those who would ignore human right of others. It is out of reason that murders would live comfortably in prison being fed and general people would live in efforts with least public assistance. It is common sense in Japan that whoever broke the rule and brought turbulence in the society should be punished. I do not think that death sentence would disappear in Japan.

As quite usual then would come Japan reproach. It seems very often that European or American would believe without any doubt that what they think is absolutely right, as if it is the very their task and fate to broaden their idea to primitively developed barbarians. Well there is no other developed countries but Japan to have a capital punishment. Japanese are brute, and they eat whales, too... In general, European or American are open, reasonable and kind. I have no doubt about it. But once we are standing on the other side due to benefit, they would ware the superior air and just push their idea to other, without imagining even to hear a single word of people living in "different" world. They are too busy to have interest what an idea Japanese would have for the capital punishment and for how European would think about it.

Japanese common sense is out of reason in the world. This common phrase is but used just to look down to what Japanese would do. But it should not just be that. Lost camera or wallet was found at police station, a stranger helped me at train station... If such unreasonable happening would happen in Japan, why can we be proud of it? Even if European would call us barbarian, we would not intentionally open old woulds of Europeans. Such common matter in Japan would never happen in poor Europe! As we already know that they have no idea to have respect for others, Japanese should justify themselves. No way to europanise Japan! In such decade with so the unreliable government, the idea is quite important.

Learning from mistakes

It is considered very important in Japan to learn from mistakes of other people. It would be common wisdom of a team and this would avoid next unknown mistakes. In Japan, their first mistake would not be seriously treated, but the second time, it is fatal. Everybody knows there is no prefect people that can do anything without mistake. Therefore, it is sometimes boring just to hear success story. It just sounds bragging and somebody can even be skeptical. This is because many Japanese prefer unsuccessful stories.

I once wrote that it is European that would not apologize easily. I feel the same during work. If other people would find fault with others, they would feel very uncomfortable. Then they try to excuse in some way to pass it by. In addition, they are very indifferent to mistakes of others. As soon as they find that "I was not fault", the idea would disappear very quickly from their mind. And they repeat their own mistakes again. Such a behavior, Japanese would never accept. How would have Japanese behaved in such the situation? People would say naturally thank you to whom found his mistake before customers would find it. If it would have come from a customer as a market claim, it might have spoiled products' or company's fame. It is worth gratitude to be able to avoid it. Moreover, Japanese would take the mistake of others very seriously and would consider what they had had done in the place, and try to have a system or rule in their team or group to avoid anybody's doing that again. They would not just blame individual for his mistakes. It is a great loss of a team if its member would privatize their individual mistakes.

How people can feel it as if their own mistakes of others', such idea can only arise where the whole team would be blamed by its member's individual mistakes such as in Japan. Although each member itself is not very talented, they can work in a group very well. It is the very strong point of Japanese and it is hard for European to do the same.

Since long years, Japanese education is deteriorating year by year. I am expecting that it would return to what it should be by revision of Educational Principal Law and hard work of current prime minister and his co-workers. It was a wise decision. I wish also that Japan would be able to produce people to be able to survive and succeed all over the world even alone, as Japan used to do before war time.

Endurance 我慢

The idea I can hardly find here is to be patient. Of course it may not only be in Austria, but also other European countries, too. Divorce rate is incredibly high from a Japanese sense, people may tend to divorce quickly if they do not find merit to continue it. There are lots of divorced at their high ages, too. On the other hand, they are quite careful and it is also usually seen that a couple would not marry after living together for relatively long time and have their own children. Both situations can be rarely seen in Japan compared to in Europe.

I never intend to say that to be patient is the most important thing in life. Needless patience is not necessary, however, question is if people can somehow control their feelings and it is quite important. Everything depends on mental state. In Europe, Japanese martial arts are quite popular. I remember that I had to go to Kendo training in a cold winter day and we have to bear to stand on ice chilly gym floor with bear feet, and of course it was not allowed to ware sweater. I wonder if European would do in the same manner. In general in Europe, martial arts are regarded just as a technique to fight against enemy or protect own body, the most important point, this mental strength to overwhelm weakness of its own is completely forgotten or not in their interest. As I heard, club activities in Japanese schools recently are getting to be just a "play", such sever training are even avoided. I believe that Japanese success in economy since 50 years are based on mental strength and tanaciousness of Japanese people and not because they are just clever and deft compared to other nations. I would often feel that my Austrian colleages are weak against mental stress when working together with Japanese customers. They work quite "naturally" and in comfort. Telling the truth, I have never felt stressed working in Austria.

To be good at patient might be a know how to get along in life on the island without having any conflicts, it means much more in recent time that egos tend to stride boldly in the society. "Bushi wa kuwanedo takayoji" (Samurai is humble but noble) There was a time that Japan was still very poor but its spiritual nobleness was highly respected by foreign people. Such a precious value is going to be lost even in Japan, but it might be the right time to remeber once again and be accepted by the rest of the world as "Mottainai" (feeling of wasting something that can still be used) was recognised and highly evaluated by Afrian politician as a very precious value in life.

Summer in Austria

What I noticed after coming back from vacation in Japan this summer, that I do not hear any cicada crying in Austria. I was fully certain that it was the reason that the feeling of summer lacks here. I heard that it is not possible to hear cicadas here unless going south to Croatia or Greece. So far, I often read or heard that the Japanese people would explain to foreigners that "there are four seasons in Japan", but of course the foreigners would think that they have of course in their countries, too. What I really noticed this time; noisy cicadas in summer, again noisy frogs at night in country side, insects sings in autumn. People would eat eels in summer and in fall the sword fish often appears on the dining table. Well, feeling of seasons does not just come from sight, greens and colored leaves but also from ears and mouth. Japanese cuisine are much in variation than in Europe, appears always food in season in turn. Here in Austria it might be just leek, asparagus, mushrooms and homemade liquor called most, and half-wine grape juice called sturm, and maybe peasant. There is no idea of season about fish and menu items in restaurants would not change so drastically all through the year.

Thinking in this way, the typical explanation about Japan by Japanese that "there are four seasons in Japan" may also be interpreted that emotion or sense of Japanese people are directly deeply connected with seasons. It is understandable that Haiku (poem in that number of possible letters is strongly regulated) was born in Japan and people are able to feel its subtle sense within a very short description. I have once tried Haiku translation in German language in Berlin but it was rather aridity. I assume it was because I have no chance to imagine by myself if everything is written in detail. That Japanese prefer not to separate right or wrong very clearly may based on abundant Japanese nature. Although Japanese people like ambiguous situation, business culture in Japan does not seem the same. Japanese business people would like to reason any potential problem or fault to improve quality. Here in Austria they would rather not clarify the reason of fault, because they would think that it might be a private attack or accusation. It is quite important for Japanese to know such mental differences between Japanese and people from other countries and do not force them to do the same as Japanese would do. By the way, I did not think that cicada plays so an important role that I can feel summer...

Bads to appologize and not to 謝らない業と謝る業

Since the last incident of Schindler's elevator made in Switzerland, Japanese media has been always blaming the company for its problem handling. The company will not officially apologize for the incidents but is just blaming maintenance companies for the cause of the trouble. They say that the company does not want to lose the market share of Japan by apologizing for that and is not willing to cooperate for investigation although the company's elevators actually have had lots of troubles in the market in many countries. Major opinions in the media are that the company should quickly apologize for that. When I read the opinions, I remembered a situation in blog by Mr. Hanaoka which I often read, there were lots of accusations from the fans of "Morning Musume (morning girls)." for Mr.Hanaoka's defamation that he ought to apologize quickly and retract his words. Many fans wrote that the way of his apologizing is not appropriate nor enough. The discussion if somebody apologizes good enough or not, should be asked only in Japan? Principally, it is very seldom that people would apologizes so often and easily except Japan. Have you ever heard that somebody advised you never to say "I am sorry" when unfortunately involved in an traffic accident abroad? It might be one of the easiest examples. Japanese can forget past mistakes of others when it has been once properly apologized. It is quite natural to ask apology for the person in charge even in rather impolite way and it is taken as usual in whole Japanese society. It may result in an unexpected trouble for the people that support the "accused" people and lessen his crime, even if their insistence is based upon facts. Here I can find a problem in Japan or I have to ask myself if Japan is really a democratic country. This is a custom of Japanese to just follow major opinion blindly. Although there has been found no problem with a certain elevator system somewhere, the discussion point would be bent to completely wrong direction; a new problematic issue would be created there that the elevator is just installed there even if it is working free from problems.

Our neighbor countries that would tend to boldly put their weakness aside and just criticize against Japan, they would be never changed to excuse Japan and it is not the topic, if Japan had apologized or how. Their attitude would be never changed and they have to keep doing that. They have learned through their diplomatic relation ship with Japan that their regime can keep their face toward their citizens and Japan would spontaneously transfer money to them without even complaining, if they keep accusing Japan. It is very pity that that was Japanese politicians that have built up such a shameful tradition. Moreover, a certain country even blamed when Japanese government decided to restart ODA which had once frozen. In Japanese sense, anybody can expect to hear "Thank you very much" from the country. Many Japanese must have thought what a shameless behavior of that country was. However, it seems to me that it is just as same as the company Schindler did then, considering total damage by official apology to customers and decided not to do so. It is quite general in the countries except Japan that just to apologize does not help anyone, or it might be even taken negatively to apologize so superficially and actually behave in different way. I often find critiques or even anger by Japanese that are living abroad that European or American would not say "I am sorry" when they can naturally expect it. Of course I experienced similar cases by myself in Europe.

Here arises a question, if Japanese can be the human race which can force other people to apologize honestly, or to excuse them because they have once properly apologized. Foreigners cannot be in the case. There might be some exceptions, but they would only apologize when they admit their fault. Accusers would just pile the facts in decent way. Nobody in foreign countries would say apology in the way Japanese would do, they would never accuse other people just out of feeling, nor deny personality because of the fault. Japanese people tend to expect quite naturally that others would have the same feeling and accuse, discriminate those who cannot share the same feeling. Such Japanese sense of feeling would cause just a mistrust in global society. To plead or justify themselves is not a natural virtue of Japanese, but it should be understood that nobody should not change or distort his opinion in the world, even if it may sound unfair or uncomfortable. There are just third persons to just it fairly, those who has no insistence would never be understood and just receive accusations that are based on insistence of its accuser. Honesty would not be just respected, but just be preyed on. Without knowing that the Japanese sense of feeling is quite peculiar in the world, there is no chance to understand behavior of foreigners on apology. That should be the reason for foreign businesspersons to have a big problem to survive in Japan. I just wonder if people can learn something from that. I just wonder if Japanese people can learn something from the case of Schindler to know the Japanese uniqueness.
