If you would address five Austrian people in the history, whom would you do? Due to the local newspater, Anton Sailer (Toni Sailer) is one of the five Austrians to mention for Japanese. He died at 73 years old after having fighting against his cancers for years and his funeral was carried out on last Saturday. In his hometown Kitzbuehl, one of the biggest Austrian ski resorts, lots of people gathered to mourn his death including ski stars such as Jean Claude Killy, Herman Mayer and Nicol Hosp, and many politicians.

He became a star in Austria when he won the three races in Winter Olympic in Cortina 1956, when the country was struggling hard from the war time recession. He was very young 20 then, established the ski school after his name and hotels in his home town Kitzbuehl. He also came to Japan as a movie star and casted with Yuzo Kayama. His contribution to Japanese ski boom was enomous. He also designed some courses in Japan such as Sailer-Gelände in Appi-Kougen in Aomori prefecture. I was once there for skiing 18 years ago, now it reminds me somehow of courses in Kitzbuehl, wide and flat piste.
彼は１９５６年にコルチナでの冬季オリンピックで３冠を勝ち取って、当時戦後からの復旧下にあったオーストリアでスターの存在になりました。彼は当時まだ２０歳ととても若く、彼の生まれ故郷のキッツビュールに彼の名前を採ったスキー学校とホテル施設を建設しました。彼は映画俳優としても来日し、加山雄三とも競演。日本のスキーブームへの彼の貢献は多大なものであったとのこと。彼は日本の安比高原にあるザイラーゲレンデでも知られるように、スキー場の設計にも携わっています。今思えば、１８年前に一度行ったことのある安比高原の広大なピステは、何かしらキッツビュールを思い起こさせるものです。
